To all the users in chat having issues with klitoris, protip: it requires sudo for pretty much every command.

There’s an awesome linux tool called “fuck”. When you make a typo in a CLI command and get an error message, all you have to do is type “fuck” and it looks at your last command and the error message and takes a guess at fixing it. If it’s right all you have to do is hit Enter. Super useful!

No, you should touch klitoris or finger klitoris, not bash it.

      man klitoris

      no manual entry for klitoris

      Well that explains a lot.

I avoided Gnome for exactly that reason for years but the shell extensions for gnome have improved a lot and it’s pretty flexible now. If you don’t mind depending on the addin authors maintaining your favorites.Dash to panel or dock is virtually a whole different UI.

Ngl, for me both GNOME and GTK+ suck, their governance, design principles, development principles, and both user-facing and dev-facing cultures, are authoritarian and really toxic. Look at, for example, the Mutter controversy, or the controversy woth GTK4 and the subsequent creation of both MATE and Cinnamon, or the drama with Zrythm (which author I do personally support) and FalkTX, etc.

I honestly find it odd that anyone brings up “no choices” and “lack of customisation” as a point against GNOME at all… Nothing in any desktop environment comes close to the versatility of GNOME extensions.

Yes, KDE included. I don’t think you understand the level of flexibility that being able to monkey-patch the GNOME shell provides. And I say that as someone who loves both KDE and GNOME for different reasons.

Honestly, I personally feel sorry (with every intention to offend) that you and others like you settle for and defend tooth and nail a half-baked solution, glued together with saliva and that breaks every time a core GNOME developer decides on it like monkey-patching over a shitty API. Not to mention the fact that KDE also allows it, and I say this as a KDE user, for the deepest part of its extensibility and scriptability, but without breaking it just because it looked ugly, and also allows other types of extensions, such as compiled dynamic libraries, or Plasmoids and components.

              finally someone says it.

the extensions might not be core utilities of gnome and break on an update, but they allow for customization that even kde doesn’t provide yet everyone is saying gnome has a “lack of customization”

You’re right. And it would be so simple to just drop the G and make it Image Manipulation Program. They could even use the same impish logo!

They could, but they never will though. Chiefly because someone asked them to and, after stamping their feet like Veruca Salt, the devs have resolved to never ever stop pouting about it.

Don’t forget iPods were this big back when the iPhone was released:

And as others pointed out they had the iMac and iBook and iTunes and the iMac was full of more iNames that I can’t even think of right now. It fit their branding enough that SNL did a joke about iRan and iRack

Common dictionary words are not trademarkable. In fact, if an existing trademark becomes common in speech it becomes genericized and the trademark is lost. One of my personal hobbies is doing that to Velcro.

That, and you’ve got to remember how big iPods were at the time. In 2007, it was weird that Apple was entering the cell phone market. The iSomething branding basically saved the company in 2001 with the iMac and iBook, the iPod was the first electronics gadget I ever remember being worn as a status symbol, the first that got treated like designer clothing or shoes. That “I have an iPod, and you have…whatever that is.” White headphone cords were a fashion statement. The Motorola Razr phone got the same treatment before the iPhone.

Physical products - maybe, but it doesn’t seem to apply to software. And Apple is not the only offender in that (although I have to admit that they’re somewhat good at coming up with generic and yet recognisable names because of the context). Just try to think of a desktop or mobile OS that doesn’t bundle a default app with a generic name like Files, Mail, Internet and so on.

They’re not trying to trademark those. Others can call their default apps the same thing and it’s fine. Others can’t call their default in house browser chrome (unless they’re google).

Yeah most space age material names are. It’s dacron wrapped in mylar surmounted in inconel plated in clyno and attached with velcro. Which of those did I make up?

I know that Mylar, Inconel and Velcro are real, so it’s a toss-up between Dacron and Clyno.

After consulting an online source, I vote that Clyno is the imposter.
