if you try to open the image link to expand the map image, it’ll take you to the reddit post. Because the image isn’t being hosted here, it’s hosted there. And also, the post is deleted there, so, for me at least, there’s no way to expand the image and zoom in. I’m on firefox, if it matters.
- Convenience. Far easier to get the reddit link, than download the pic, then upload it.
That’s the only reason, but I can think of some others:
- hosting. keeping the pic on reddit dont raise lemmy bandwith, or cloud cost.
- free moderation. If the pic is illegal somehow, reddit will delete it, without I having to care about breaking some law.
- origin. Keeping the origin well known, just for moral honesty
IMO, # 2 and 3 are terrible reasons.
Re: #2: If bandwidth or storage were a problem, the instance admins could handle it. Preemptively hotlinking to some external site deprives them of the chance to solve the problem in a better way, while also making it more likely that the pic becomes unavailable and leaves an orphaned post.
Re: #3: Another way of saying that is “letting Reddit’s corporate censorship usurp the Lemmy mods’ and admins’ power.” Does it still sound like a good thing? Just because fucking Reddit, of all non-person entities, has a problem with it, doesn’t mean it’s right or that the Lemmy instance hosting it is subject to the same laws!

Danish pastry is not soggy. On the contrary, it’s a lot crispier than what the rest of Europe is eating.
Perhaps they’re thinking of the pastry called a danish, which is not Danish. We ourselves call it a Berliner, but I think it’s actually from Austria.

The origins are unclear. The Danish bakers stole the recipe for soggy cakes from Vienna, hence the name, but then the Austrian bakers startede calling it a copenhagen plunder. Immigrants brought the cake to America by the name danish.
Technically the whole range of similar cakes are neither cakes, bread or pastry. They’re viennoiseries, which is layered dough, just like croissants.

We improved them. One of Italy’s most famous dishes, carbonara pasta, has a French version that is way better.

There are massive leaps to be made by combining French techniques with foreign ingredients, it just requires accepting that maybe other places also have good food, perhaps even better food in some cases.

The Italians embraced them much sooner and did a lot more with them. The French were too worried they were poisonous because they were nightshades and only slowly adopted them with the advent of tomato exports from Italy and Spain.
Every now and then this picture or some variation of pops up and my country gets slapped with being rice country.
We cook and eat better than the spanish, french and italians put together. And we are not afraid of our spices.

We Dutch people don’t even eat that much sauerkraut since it is a German dish. The French actually know us for our baked goods. You know the ones that kick in after an hour.
As someone who was lucky enough to visit Italy, it is far from overrated.

Finland is the land where only spices are salt and pepper.
France is good for bread and wine. French food is basically Italian food without pasta. Lots of butter and salt with no competing flavors. Want something with your savory dish? Fuck you, pair it with a wine. Want spicy? Fuck you that’s not tradition!

While “rotten cabbage” seems to be a correct descriptor, I was somewhat aghast to not be included in the potato munchers. I mean… people are out there calling us potatoes… but then I looked it up and Germany is in the lower midfield of how much potatoes countries in the EU eat.
I’m tipping my hat to you Latvia. Respect. 112,7 kg per person per year. That is nearly double the 57,4 kg per person per year we eat in Germany.
