Mine is that the useState hook is an actual plague on the entire React ecosystem. Regardless of your opinions of React, if you wanna use something then use it right.
The entire modern web tech stack should be thrown in a dumpster, ignited with gasoline, and blown up with a nuke for good measure.
100%
I want an entire separation between my view and the data. We strayed from the true path as soon as we let web sites enforce the CSS
I would love to see TCP/IP replaced by something more secure and uncentralizable like Reticulum.
Firefox is a good browser
It’s the only non chrome browser
Safari? I’m not suggesting you use it, but it does exist.
I’d care if they had a Linux version
We don’t acknowledge the existence of proprietary blobs here
How about the KDE ones?
There’s niche WebKit browsers too, like Epiphany. Also Ladybird in development, but that went full AI slop AFAIK.
Firefox is good, Mozilla is bad
You know what, I’ve been a Firefox user since the days of beta Phoenix. I’ve expressed your view for years now - Firefox was great, but held back by a commercial org that wanted fancy SF offices, fancy SF compensation etc.
But I tried out Helium a little while ago and in truth, I’m not sure Firefox is all that good these days. Helium is basically ungoogled-chromium + extension support + super lean UI.
The upside is that you no longer have to contend with sites that have given up on Firefox testing. The downside is manifest v3. But all in all, I find it a better browser. Firefox is so busy telling its story, and finding revenue, that it just seems to have left behind product market fit.
Mozilla has totally lost their way. But using any chromium-based browser is still bowing down to Google’s near monopolistic control over web ‘standards’.
Using the blink engine, even in a ungoogled browser, still gives google power and is immoral.
If a browser does not support unlock origin it is worthless. So Firefox wins by all opponents willfully exiting the race
This was my central argument when they tried to take away my Firefox at work.
HTML/TeX/etc are real programming languages that just happen to be declarative as opposed to imperative.
Waaaooww what a position
I’d want to disagree bc I know Nix and that feels declarative to me where as html just feels like actual drawing, like there’s no conditional or iteration therefore how are you transforming information? HTML is a markup bc you need to render a UI and you don’t know anything about the screen or keyboard&mouse so cope
AI will actually kill the fuck out of us, even if it is just a stochlastic parrot.
AI will have to pick up the pace. Humans are the bigger problem right now.
It will leave the “bigger problem” humans alone and get rid of the “not a problem” humans the first thing.
Not an unpopular opinion.
I am still not convinced vim does much of anything for your productivity.
Do other editors let you save multiple sessions? Where you can open up any large project exactly where you left off, every tab, split, window, layout, and file already in your buffer for all of your projects or just the last one you were working on?
If not, this feature has saved me a lot of set up time. It’s been a long time since I used anything else.
I feel like vscode and pycharm both do that out of the box?
Before my big monitor broke I had pycharm split into four panes for the backend project and 3 for the frontend. It was nice.
Yeah! Emacs has always been the superior editor!
Shun the non-believer! Shun!
How dare you? I can absolutely assure you that it completely ruins mine.
The
unlesskeyword is an abominationx = "I disagree." y = false puts x unless yI miss it when writing python.
Specifically I hate it as a prefix. It’s even worse when else clauses become involved!
x = "this is great" y = "this is awful" z = false unless(z) puts(y) else puts(x) end
Linters are terrible.
Style/formatting linters, anyway, particularly when it comes to whitespace. The goal of formatting code with whitespace is to optimize for human readability. A linter based on a set of rules is not human and thus cannot judge human readability. There is really no formatting rule you can write that will not someday have exceptions on a large-enough codebase.
Contributors should be responsible for submitting readable code, and ensuring that is what reviews are for.
I’ll go a step further: formatting for human-readability is the job of the reader, not the writer. Hardcoded line breaks, spacing, etc. are never going to be a good solution because the idea is wrong from the start. This is a display issue, not a logic issue. It needs to be solved at the display end.
Use a syntax-aware editor that formats code the way you like it. Save it any goddamn way that is syntactically valid. Anyone else who opens it will see it any way the like in their own syntax-aware editor.
“But my editor doesn’t do logical formatting!” Yes, because the entire world has been insane for several decades, and shitty editors are normalized. If the world had realized this 30 years ago, there wouldn’t be a code editor in existence today that didn’t do this properly. Demand better and better will be normalized.
Using LLMs are not the same as using intellisense or compilers and there are a myriad number of reasons not to use it that could fill an entire book and I will look down on any company or freelance developer that uses it.
Yes I’ll fight Linus over this and yes I’ll be right.
Isn’t this the most common layman’s opinion?
It’s also the opinion of people who don’t make a habit of drinking the special koolaid.
It’s the most common internet opinion, but IRL people use it without a second thought, and will get annoyed if you call them out on it.
EDIT: I don’t think this post was talking about laymen to begin with.
There’s a reason.
Fight me (Not literally) LLMs used to give garbage output but nowadays they are actually good and if given in the hands of right person, it can increase the productivity.
You might say productivity increases but salary dosent but that is a mangement issue and does not make LLMs bad.
Every issue I have with the tech has nothing to do with how “useful” it is.
I’d even argue it’s only useful in the short term, and extremely harmful in the long term. Not just because of it’s fascist origins, but because developing it further is accelerating climate change unnecessarily when we direly need to do the opposite. Climate change will rapidly undo any of the good LLMs manage to accomplish.

OP making this post
If you are getting paid for engineering software, your labour should be licenced in an appropriate jurisdiction, and you should be liable to losing said licence if you do shit job.
Mine is basic since I’m still a noob programmer, but if you are on an OS with APT or something similar, you should absolutely automate all your commands for updating your software packages by consolidating everything into a single script.
It’s easy to create a bash script that runs all your needed commands sequentially, so why not? Hell, I take it a step further with my script by aliasing it to 2 letters since I don’t wanna type the full script name or type tab to autocomplete it.
I just use Linux mint which does all this for me out of the box
Vue > React
Async/await turns the concepts from the [CSP] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Communicating_sequential_processes) that are useful into an overcomplicated mess in every language that implements it, and golang is a prime example of how clear and intuitive an implementation aligned with CSP can be without requiring arcane typing and language infrastructure that comes with async/await approaches.
People in FOSS community (including users) nitpick way too much about eachother’s ethics and are mostly dictators so they expect everybody’s views to align with themselves and each sub-community/individual see themselves as the source of moral balance.
“oh no one of project XYZ maintainers doesn’t like trans people we should boycott the project and fork it into LibreLGBTQXYZ”
be professional ffs. See the project as the software and it’s technicality, art, science and engineering. we can’t be too picky about individual people’s beliefs and ethics especially in current situations.
Transphobia is now what antisemitism was during the Holocaust.
This framing of trans rights being pulverized as an edge-case moral purity signaling is low-key genocide enabler discourse.
It is only a matter to be careful to set boundaries to the centrism so that it doesn’t bleed over to the nazi side.
That being said, weaponized purity in online politics, and online software politics specifically might be a problem, sometimes. Minimal gain and huge inconvenience to the resistance, but I won’t go into it right now.
Is it really a genocide? Like I’m trans and being pushed towards losing my life, and that’s bad, but it feels weird calling that a genocide when you compare it to the actual Holocaust or Palestine or the Sudanese civil war. For it to qualify I think I’d have to be arrested and executed for being trans, not just driven to suicide because I don’t have any friends and no employers will hire me.
Yes. Trans or not, you must be not listening to your own words, thinking that the Holocaust started in 1941, not in the vilification and anti-Jewish legislation during the Nazi dictatorship. And this is a successful strategy for current genociders, having an outrageous, colossal example of industrialized terror to terminate thought.
Your argument is like, “can you really call anything murder when Dahmer ate so many people? Just killing somebody can’t be murder in comparison”. No, it is not a relative quantity, is a yes or no question, based on specific international criteria.
The answer to which is “Yes”. Having numbers of people drawn to suicide because you banned their health care on religious fundamentalist grounds is textbook genocide. The only debate between experts is because trans people are not immediately recognized as an ethnic or religious group. (But, well, the reasoning of a hate crime is a burden of the perpetrator, isn’t it? They’re killing us for religious reasons, so in my opinion this is not even a debate.)
BTW, it is the same state-actors pushing both genocides, so your whataboutism comes home to bite you. You are either able to see through the lying teeth of genocide criminals, or you believe what other people want you to think.
Here are some experts to school you:
Banning the healthcare of a minority group, systemically refusing to recognize their existence, treating them as a group with less rights, banning them from certain spaces, making them face horrific conditions when incarcerated, supporting hatred against them that leads to killings…
Okay, yeah, that does make sense.
A lot of what people hate about Windows 11 is 10 years too early, especially when it comes to use of web components as interface
The Internet was always going to end up like this, attempts at “small, tight-knit, communities” will only last for a few years at most
Google has done more for web standards than the open source community ever could
The next mobile OS should abandon apps
Even if you did truely own your games, you would still be unhappy
You don’t like personalised advertising not because it feels invasive, but because you’re scared of being predictable and\or manipulable.
You don’t like personalised advertising not because it feels invasive, but because you’re scared of being predictable and\or manipulable.
No, I specifically don’t like targeted advertising because it’s invasive.
If it was an individual following you around learning what you do and what you like/want, you could charge them with stalking. But because it’s not just one person, it’s a multi-billion dollar company working for a privacy invading industry, it’s suddenly OK?
Go fuck yourself.

The stalker is trying to intimidate or harass me for their own personal ends. People are bad, companies are in for profit.
The company will try and sell me more toilet paper because they know I have diarrhea. The multimillion dollar corporation is spying on me to make line go up. The thing people actually get angry about is the predictive ad which feel like it removes their autonomy.
The thing people forget when they get an personalised ad is that they are not the main character. Their behaviour is similar to others and the in the end the feeling that actions, even benign ones, can be predicted gets people upset.
It’s like the guy today complaining that his TV is always listening to him. Yes, because Samsung can make a few cents for putting a Domino’s ad on the TV when the word pizza is said. Oh but that means someone could access hundreds of thousands of hours of recordings! Of people talking in front of their TV. Of Hundreds of thousands of people. Oh but someone could access the recordings of my voice, determine a close family member, make a voice clone and get them to give them money!
I dunno, romance scammers seem to do just fine and that even works on people with 50 year old TVs.
Go fuck yourself.
I prefer to refer to it as contributing to the PornHub Year in Review.
The thing people actually get angry about is the predictive ad which feel like it removes their autonomy.
Negative, it is the farther reaching effects of this data-mining hellscape that bothers me.
It’s not a matter of my autonomy being removed, it’s a matter of privacy. Full stop. This is the very first time in human history where people’s lives aren’t private. Your attention is a commodity traded on the open market, whether you want to be or not. And that’s the part I have a problem with.
Today, it’s being too aggressive marketing to pregnant teens. Tomorrow, it’s your insurance company buying your advertising profile, analyzing your past shopping habits to determine that you’re at a high risk for Chron’s Disease, and jacking your rates up over it.
You said it yourself, the line must go up. It’s not just about charging fair prices for goods and services, it’s about separating people from as much money as possible, by any means necessary.
Data aggregation can be weaponized against you. How many times do you think people struggling to make ends meet get shown ads for predatory loans? Or gambling addicts getting shown sports betting ads?

In the days of AI chatbots, is this really a far fetched idea? Just pipe the data into an AI and tease anything useful you possibly can out of it. The computers handle the raw data processing, you just collect what comes out the other end.
After all, the line must go up.
