U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar said Thursday she is running for governor of Minnesota, promising to take on Donald Trump while unifying a state that has endured a series of challenges even before the federal government’s immigration crackdown.

Klobuchar’s decision gives Democrats a high-profile candidate and proven statewide winner as their party tries to hold onto the office occupied by Gov. Tim Walz.

Klobuchar cited Trump’s immigration crackdown in Minnesota, federal officers killing two Minnesotans who protested, the assassination of a state legislative leader and a school shooting that killed multiple children — all within the last year. She avoided direct mention of ongoing fraud investigations into the child care programs that Trump has made a political cudgel.

🤠🐍Crikey! Look at this beauty! What we’ve got here is a absolutely stunning specimen of a .ML comment in its natural habitat!

Now, you’ve gotta be real careful with these fellas - they’re absolutely fascinating to observe, but don’t you dare let ‘em get their hooks into ya! See, what they’ll do is they’ll present themselves as perfectly reasonable, right? But if you start believin’ what they’re sayin’, mate, they’ll latch onto your critical thinking and just absolutely devour it from the inside out!

This is one of the most dangerous thought parasites in the digital ecosystem, and she’s a beaut! Best observed from a safe distance with your skepticism intact. What a ripper! 📷

Do you have any kind of real substantive things to say to me or is it just liberal pablum?

You right that your written text specifically doesn’t call for that.

The dick part comes from the context and your word choice; the “meta” if you will. The users see the post title, then they see the comments, and they get this specific thread where the first comment was calling out shitty centrism.

Then your reply was critical and sarcastic: “its funny…” it’s not funny. You clearly don’t think it’s funny. You’re being sarcastic, which in this context is a hostile choice. If we were in a room together, everyone would feel the negative vibe.

further the fact that you were being critical of the poster who technically did write something that you agree with. But it wasn’t good enough for you. You chose to criticize it for not being good enough. You could have chosen to add to it in a friendly way. Dickish.

And the cherry on top is that ML has a really bad reputation. I have personally quit discussions with ml people because there’s no honest discussion, it’s just a jump to pushing niche agenda and anger and putting others down. You are wearing that domain on your name tag. It speaks to something about the choices you make and the people you like to associate with.

All of these things combined is why I think you’re getting downvoted to hell.

I don’t know you personally and the fact that you’re actually open to some discussion is quite valuable in my book. Personally, you’re coming off as much higher quality person than most ML people I’ve dealt with.

                You asked, so I answered!

So again just gonna point out that no one has any substantive things to say to me its all just how you feel which is utterly worthless.

I always question this idea that .ml instances are somehow bad rep. The perspectives are so varied from the left of whatever the Lemmy.world instance is at political that that is a really wild generalization. Are there annoying leftists? Oh my god yes but there are also annoying liberals.

You do need to have people be willing to engage in good faith, which I do strive to do, but its not pushing an agenda its expressing a different political ideology which largely fundamentally reimagines what society can be in a way where it is better for us all. Not modest reform that makes you feel like things are better when all the same systems of oppression exists but one where those systems are gone. It takes a lot of work to learn how to have those conversations in a way that is productive and wholly valueless…they are almost impossible to do over these kinds of forums unless every party is coming to the table in good faith which I find to be rare.

Anyway I disagree with how you are characterizing what I said still but agree to disagree I guess.

They are fundamentally both the exact same in regards to their inability to push for substantive change needed. Calling her a centrist in comparison to Walz is patently ignoring every right wing take they share on every important issue (right wing being in support of capital). It’s comical to me and speaks to only having a surface level analysis of both of them without any regard for their complicity in the systems of oppression they support and prop up.

      Ilhan Omar.

Not only is she right (and votes what she says) about just about every single policy issue, she’s also proven without a doubt that she’s every bit the fighter Centrist bloviators pretend to be, what with enduring the constant scapegoating from both Republicans and her own party as well as hardly breaking her stride after being attacked by a MAGA cultist

And before you go “but she’s too divisive! No Republicans or swing voters would vote for her!”, the vast majority of them wouldn’t vote for Klobuchar either, and she (Omar) would bring out the base several times better.

This is demonstrably false, given Klobuchar’s outstate vote totals. For all her issues, she has been reliably able to get voters to vote for her that wouldn’t vote for a Democrat otherwise.

          Klobuchar’s outstate vote totals

Fun fact: there’s not a lot of those available for House races, so that’s a worthless datapoint wrt comparing her and Omar.

For all her issues, she has been reliably able to get voters to vote for her that wouldn’t vote for a Democrat otherwise.

More reliably than Omar has been getting votes from people who would never vote for a zionist? Or that would never vote for someone who approves ICE funding? I highly doubt it.

Fun fact: there’s not a lot of those available for House raises, so that’s a worthless datapoint wrt comparing her and Omar.

Vote percentage comparisons are valid between local and statewide races.

More reliably than Omar has been getting votes from people who would never vote for a zionist? Or that would never vote for someone who approves ICE funding? I highly doubt it.

That’s your prerogative, but unfortunately, I don’t believe there’s more of us on the left than there are centrist/moderate/whatever voters that aren’t turned off by those positions. MN is a blue state, but it’s a very Midwest-style of democrat. The Farm-Labor part of the coalition has been shrinking in the past 20 years or so, as races have become more nationalized even on the local level.

Vote percentage comparisons are valid between local and statewide races.

Klobuchar vote percentage in November 2024 election: 56.2%

Omar vote percentage in November 2024 election: 75.3%

              You were saying?

I don’t believe there’s more of us on the left than there are centrist/moderate/whatever voters that aren’t turned off by those positions

That’s just you being wrong 🤷

The “moderate swing voter” that the DNC leadership and the billionaire-owned media pretend to be the end-all be-all for Democrats has been a critically endangered species for decades while the politically disenfranchised Left takes up at least a third of eligible voters nationwide and even more in states with strong union traditions like Minnesota.

MN is a blue state, but it’s a very Midwest-style of democrat.

If you mean Union Strong, then yes.

If you mean “there being rural folks means that they’re automatically more conservative than other democrat strongholds”, then nope. Wrong again.

The Farm-Labor part of the coalition has been shrinking in the past 20 years or so

You sure about that? Because people like Omar, Walz, Franken, and Paul Wellstone all seem (with the exception of parts of Walz’ platform) to be MUCH more progressive than the majority of Democrats from Neoliberal bastions like New York, California, and Chicago…

races have become more nationalized even on the local level.

Yet Omar won her election by a HUGE margin last time, Klobuchar much less so. Partially BECAUSE of her national profile as a darling of the Left.

Edit: corrected hugely embarrassing mistake of mixing up the names of progressive Paul Wellstone and conservative Norm Coleman 😬😳

She’s outperformed other Democrats in the years she’s run, so not sure if relying on this platform is a good representation of our state.

As for other challengers, I’m not sure. Not a lot of other higher-profile DLFers that haven’t already thrown their hat into other races.
