Questing Beast has a RPG Playstyle Survey. Please share. All data will be released once survey closes.

Knave and Maze Rats were created by Questing Beasts. I really like the tables in Knave 2E

While filling out this survey I noticed this isn’t how I run games at all. Or how I experience playing ttrpgs.

Each of my games and tables works very differently from a playstyle point of view. Do people run all their games the same usually?

Like realism vs drama, that is a system and table question, not a how do you run your games in general question. If you run a Masks game with the same level of realism and drama as you run The Dark Eye, at least one of your games will feel off imo.

The same is true for most of the questions made. In narrative games the players will have much more agency over the world than in a hexcrawl. One will have cooperative world building, while the other is about exploring the either preset world and/or randomly generated events and locations. The list goes on.

My point: this seems to be written by someone who is used to each table or GM or player having a singular way to play. Definitely not true for the two groups I meet with a few times a month.

Is the assumption here that people play only one kind of ttrpg? As most of these would fully depend on the game I’m playing.

I answered as if I was playing Shadowdark. It’s my current favorite.

You are right that it depends on the game you’re playing. My answers would be drastically different if I was playing Trail of Cthulhu.

Unlike some of the other commenters, I had no problem answering the questions, even though I do not always play the same way.

Folks, it’s asking what you prefer, not what you always do. If you have no personal preference and just go with the flow, pick the middle option. If you have a preference, pick that even if you sometimes do it your less preferred way for some reason, such as the way the game is designed or how the group interacts.

Most of these questions are not about preferred ways to play but about approval. I’m not sure if the preference is even mentioned anywhere.

I mostly play indie games. Half of these questions barely make sense in some of those. Some of them had me thinking in interesting ways though. I’ll be interested to see your results. I expect the weird-combo outliers will have some interesting things to say.

The form lacks a free text box at the end for additional remarks. I feel like a lot of my answers would have been “it depends”. There is no one way to handle all tables, it’s highly dependent on the players and GM, settings, mood, overall goal, … I answered a lot of 3s as middle ground in between “strongly approve” and “strongly disapprove” not that I don’t care, it just depends. And even when I had stronger opinions about things I feel like it should stay flexible, not fixed in stone. I doubt values from 1 to 5 are going to convey any of this. There isn’t one magic formula that is going to work for everyone or every game.
