So they’re gonna build hybrid trains for a line that isn’t electrified yet.

No talk of electrification, just the money for trains. So i’m guessing either a kickback or the money will be absorbed after a period of not being used

If elected in November, the Coalition is promising $1.7 billion for 25 new hybrid diesel-electric trains on the Melton and Wyndham Vale lines.

    A … good… policy…? from the liberals? am I dreaming?

it’s a shit policy that sounds good on the surface (like most liberal policies)

      apparently:

      • despite what the libs say they likely won’t be able to run through the loop because it’s not about diesel fumes; it’s about having large volumes of fuel in the tunnels
      • the issue with increased capacity is there is already track congestion
      • the works currently being done on station and track upgrades are all required for hybrid or electrification capacity, so when those upgrades are done why wouldn’t you just electrify instead of wasting money on a half way solution that’ll need to be chucked out in a few years when it’s eventually electrified anyway

The Vlines becoming all electric? Really? Don’t they go quite far out rural?

from what i read this is only for melton

i guess they could be repurposed after melton electrification to run further out, so maybe that’s not so bad… but the campaign is targeting melton, and for that purpose its a shit idea

The lines are currently served by smaller, diesel V/Line trains, with local communities waiting for promised electrification of the line to run larger, more frequent Metro services.

That’s my fault for not reading the article

if ever you think “maybe the liberals have a decent policy”, you’ve misunderstood the policy :p
