mine is delta green
No Stars Without Number?
Tales from the Floating Vagabond
- Theater kid (mildly derogatory)
- Mimes actions, has never LARPed
- Hums “The Raiders March” unconsciously
- Brings pitcher of margaritas to game
I recently picked up Pilgrims of the Murk Dome based on the artwork alone. Cool setting, weirdly complicated rules for really just hands off communal story telling. Itching to play it.
Deadlands isn’t in here! Alas!
It’s present in it’s absence, then.
I chuckled at a lot of this, but have qualms with a fair few others. Some don’t say anything about the player at all, entirely dodging the premise of the meme. For example, Pathfinder “their game is just D&D without commitment” says nothing about the player, it’s just a direct critique of the game. Starfinder “just pathfinder in space” also does not comment on the player at all. GURPS sounding like a disease has nothing to do with the player. There’s examples like this in most of the games.
I’m not familiar with every one of them but the ones I am familiar with sound mostly wrong, so I expect the others are too. Seems mostly to be belittling people to make the author feel special. I don’t like it, and the comm would not be worsened by its deletion.
I’d not say Wildsea is my favorite, but I always like to bring it up because it’s really good at what it does and it will be someones favorite.
Daggerheart making the cut and Draw Steel being missing is par for course, but still sad.
I’m trying to get one of my friends to run wildsea for me! Looks really fun
I was at Breakout Con in Toronto this year. I signed up for Wildsea, sadly the game got cancelled. I will have to try next year.
I love delta green. The glass cannon play through of impossible landscapes was top tier - OP have you heard it?
I have played through IL once and am currently running it for a third time! IL is what elevates Delta Green from great game to greatest of all time
How do you feel about the final chapter?
The finale isn’t bad, but you gotta do some lifting on the way there. The real weak point is going between parts 2 & 3. Running it stock is a guaranteed way to have the worst session of your campaign
Just to note, “indie company” and “2nd biggest game on the market” aren’t mutually exclusive. This isn’t a big market, and most of it is D&D.
Ya, they are an order of magnitude smaller than D&D but also an order of magnitude larger than the #3
Agreed. But they’re still indie. This whole genre is a niche.
TTRPG systems may be well-known and famous to us nerds, so it’s easy to forget that the average person has probably only heard of D&D and a few WoDs. And Pathfinder, of course.
Damn somebody knows a Pathfinder player they don’t like huh
Where’s the entry for

?
I unironically think that Critical Role removing this hilarious one-shot in response to fan pushback, but then having no problems taking a fuck-ton of money from Amazon was the beginning of their downfall for me.
Can you give me more context? I’m curious but don’t follow critical role at all
Critical Role played this game and was sponsored by Wendy’s. Sam Riegal GMed, which way back then was noteworthy. The game was unhinged and hilarious.
After it aired, some people in the community criticized them for taking money from Wendy’s who, at that time, was receiving a lot of bad publicity for how they treated their farmer suppliers.
Critical Role apologized, scrubbed any evidence of its existence from the web just about, and pledged to donate the proceeds.
Later, Critical Role hosted a Kickstarter for an animated show of the campaign, something that many fans had been asking for. The fanbase blew their fundraising goals out of the water and hit something like 10x their goal, every stretch goal including ones added after the fact, and if I recall correctly was at that time the most successful Kickstarter in history, or might have been just in one category.
Part of this Kickstarter was a promise to backers that they would receive the entire season to own.
Some time after the Kickstarter completed, Critical Role announced that they had partnered with Amazon for the animated series and it then later turned that as a result of this, certain promises made during the campaign (like owning the first season) would not be honoured.
Some people, myself included, felt it was massively hypocritical to react so strongly to the Wendy’s thing, then bend over for Amazon of all companies.
Oh man, that is a mess. Thanks for taking the time to lay it all out for me!
Pathfinder is awesome, haters gonna hate
I’m considering becoming a professional GM, some of the more interesting games I’ve come across while planning out my game options include Knave, Ironsworn, Twilight 2000, and Dungeons & Kittens
Let’s not forget
…just to name a few legends adjacent to your listed gems. 🤘🏼
p.s. Pathfinder was, in its early days, a welcome alternative to D&D —for those that accepted a simple streamlining of the TSR/WotC SoP… Though millions of us OGs saw what it was aiming for: D&D in a LBD, but the underlying cray’s just better dressed. 🥲
My selection process was “this one sounds pretty neat”, I had no clue that I was picking legends! I’ll have to take a look at those games!
Love to hear it! 🤩🖖🏼
FWIW:
-
Starforged is essentially Ironsworn 2.0 + scifi, as it fine-tuned most of what hindered Ironsworn 1.0 (the actual 2.0 came after, and even learned from Starforged in the process! 🤘🏼)
-
PbtA & BitD have spawned dozens of distinct variants, to their credit. (pardon the latter’s redderp link)
-
and ISDYSSM is an incredibly accessible game revolving around the group creation of a location, and I love using it as a Session 0 icebreaker to then incorporate said city/grove/etc. in the main game itself —now that the group (of any experience level) feels a personal stake in the story to come!
p.s. Honorable mention for those more interested in roleplay over roll-play:
- Worlds Without Number, and Stars Without Number, by Sine Nomine
- Numenara, Ptolus, Cypher, and Invisible Sun, by the amazing Monte Cook,
- Daggerheart, by Darrington Press of Critical Role fame
Just to name a few more of the absolutely 👨🏼🍳💋👌🏼 indie systems out these days. 🥰
-
I kinda want to try them all.
Only played D&D, the Alien RPG and Dragonbane.
I own F.O.R.G.E., Dragonbane, PDF versions of Pathfinder, One Ring and a few others.
Never DMed but have started using ‘solo’ supplements to play coop games. Must find the time to play more.
Fabula Ultima
- picked it up after their D&D GM wouldn’t allow anime homebrew
- thinks the GM shouldn’t have fun
- has played every Final Fantasy
- thinks 4, 6, 7, and 9 are the only Final Fantasies
Where Paranoia?
You dare talking about this in public???
