Critical Role played this game and was sponsored by Wendy’s. Sam Riegal GMed, which way back then was noteworthy. The game was unhinged and hilarious.
After it aired, some people in the community criticized them for taking money from Wendy’s who, at that time, was receiving a lot of bad publicity for how they treated their farmer suppliers.
Critical Role apologized, scrubbed any evidence of its existence from the web just about, and pledged to donate the proceeds.
Later, Critical Role hosted a Kickstarter for an animated show of the campaign, something that many fans had been asking for. The fanbase blew their fundraising goals out of the water and hit something like 10x their goal, every stretch goal including ones added after the fact, and if I recall correctly was at that time the most successful Kickstarter in history, or might have been just in one category.
Part of this Kickstarter was a promise to backers that they would receive the entire season to own.
Some time after the Kickstarter completed, Critical Role announced that they had partnered with Amazon for the animated series and it then later turned that as a result of this, certain promises made during the campaign (like owning the first season) would not be honoured.
Some people, myself included, felt it was massively hypocritical to react so strongly to the Wendy’s thing, then bend over for Amazon of all companies.
Can you give me more context? I’m curious but don’t follow critical role at all

Oh man, that is a mess. Thanks for taking the time to lay it all out for me!
