Have a sneer percolating in your system but not enough time/energy to make a whole post about it? Go forth and be mid — welcome to the Stubsack, your first port of call for learning fresh Awful you’ll near-instantly regret.

Any awful.systems sub may be subsneered in this subthread, techtakes or no.

If your sneer seems higher quality than you thought, feel free to cut’n’paste it into its own post — there’s no quota for posting and the bar really isn’t that high.

The post Xitter web has spawned so many “esoteric” right wing freaks, but there’s no appropriate sneer-space for them. I’m talking redscare-ish, reality challenged “culture critics” who write about everything but understand nothing. I’m talking about reply-guys who make the same 6 tweets about the same 3 subjects. They’re inescapable at this point, yet I don’t see them mocked (as much as they should be)

Like, there was one dude a while back who insisted that women couldn’t be surgeons because they didn’t believe in the moon or in stars? I think each and every one of these guys is uniquely fucked up and if I can’t escape them, I would love to sneer at them.

(Credit and/or blame to David Gerard for starting this.)

So the news is now filled with stories about how AI will take over and the Ai companies might lose control of it gets smarter and at least one employee quit because it might kill us all. You know what I seem to be missing?

Actual employees doing sabotage. That is a bit odd right? They think Altman doesnt care about safety, but nobody has tried to wipe the backups. And we know they dont think that much about security.

And it isnt like sysadmins messed with systems in the past over lesser disputes.

Not even a “im turning whistleblower, here are all the internal chatlogs and documents of the employees and management”.

I’m reminded of Yudkowsky’s take that AI is totally going to kill us all and we should treat this seriously enough to bomb foreign datacenters if we think they’re involved in AI development, but that doesn’t mean that you should try to bomb local datacenters involved in AI development work. Please don’t think about what you as an individual should do about the problems facing the world; you’re just an NPC after all.

Yud isn’t necessarily inconsistent here: he really really wants the robot god to become real so it can invent the blowjob machine and win utilitarianism, but he only trusts people he’s met personally to do it, and certainly not those shifty celestials.

Please don’t think about what you as an individual should do about the problems facing the world; you’re just an NPC after all.

Or as the AI2027 blog put it:

We may only have 2 years left before humanity’s fate is sealed!

Despite the urgency, please do not pursue extreme uncooperative actions. If something seems very bad on common-sense ethical views, don’t do it.

They can’t even swarm their own corporate content writing.

In this role, a given day might include drafting, editing, brainstorming, on-site event support, and coordinating executive response to breaking news, all in close collaboration with the External Communications team and other leaders.
      - Executive Communications Writer Job Posting at Anthropic (Annual Salary: $295,000 - $345,000 USD)

A swarm of large language models is capable of shutting down the entire internet in 6 months, but for some reason they need to pay a single human over a quarter of a million dollars to draft and edit language.

Listening to Gil Durán’s The Nerd Reich (audiobook, not podcast), and learning heaps about people I’ve known were part of the Rationalist orbit for years, but hadn’t dug too much into, like Balaji Srinivasan. He apparently used the red/blue/grey tribe setup in The Network State, which was published long after Scott’s SSC post using the same language.

I remember that Balaji went nutty when the NYT published about Scott Alexander. Durán attributes that to Cade Metz reporting on Balaji telling Yarvin that they might need to intimidate/harass journalists to keep them from reporting on their fascist bullshit, but all the parallels make me wonder how long they knew/read each other. Did Scott influence Balaji first, or the other way around?

Certainly I am amused that none of the Rationalists have been named yet, 3 hours in. I wonder if it rankles, knowing how bad Eliezer has wanted to make something that people would actually pay for, having a whole book written about Thiel and Yarvin and Srinivasan where he doesn’t rate at all because he’s just some podunk little cult leader who has to beg for grants and find girlfriends to live with and do his laundry while he eats the crumbs off of their tables. Or if it stung Scott when Srinivasan’s book was panned as idiotic, knowing that at least some of those ideas were his.

i first became aware of srinivasan because he was running an extremely funny bitcoin scam. it was a $400 computer, the crypto mining platform of the future, a veritable font of wealth, and when people got it it was a raspberry pi with some shielding incorrectly attached, so that if you touched it wrong you shorted it and bricked the device. it mined a few cents a year and sent something like half of that to a16z

i also first became aware that noah smith was going to lose his mind when he cited srinivasan approvingly on twitter, i drew his attention to this, and he replied ‘no i just asked balaji about this and he said he’s cool, that it wasn’t a scam and also that he was actually put in charge of it to make it not a scam’

    From the mirror universe news

    https://www.zerohedge.com/news/2026-09-10/campaign-slow-ai-was-ready-viral-warning

ZH’s interpretation is Coxon is some kind of false flag thing to bait Dems into regulating AI

Parker Thayer argued that Coxon’s launch looked like a sophisticated public-relations operation. He traced the earliest amplification to people associated with Encode, the AI Policy Network, and the AI Futures Project.

Brian Chau’s later thread surfaced a direct political-technology link. Newspeak House’s own residency page lists Jacob Coxon among its residents and describes his work as “applying mathematics and data science to inefficient markets.” Newspeak calls itself the London College of Political Technology. Its current calendar advertises Campaign Lab sessions aimed at helping the progressive left “campaign more effectively.” The residency places Coxon inside that political-technology network.

Some of the underlying funding links are public. The Survival and Flourishing Fund’s 2025 grant table lists $2.035 million for the AI Futures Project, $516,000 for Encode AI, and $1.635 million for the AI Policy Institute. The fund attributes those grants to Jaan Tallinn. Anthropic says Tallinn led its Series A financing in 2021.

Encode identifies the Survival and Flourishing Fund as one of several foundations supporting its work. It also says it refuses funding from corporations, foreign governments, and executives at frontier AI companies. Its general counsel, Nathan Calvin, is one of the early amplifiers named in Thayer’s thread.

Some new pins for the conspiracy board I guess. They imagine a “political-technology network” quite the linguistic contortion to not use the word rationalist. No clue what LCPT is but looks like a hacker house type thing?

It feels like that ZH piece is kinda trying to do the same critihype that the AI boosters are, but with the opposite conclusion. Instead of conflating all the actual criticism of the harms of the AI bubble and associated activities with sci-fi doom cult nonsense to try and get more funding for their team who are definitely going to do it right, they’re conflating all the actual criticism of the harms of the AI bubble and associated activities with sci-fi doom cult nonsense in order to argue that either it should be shut down or else that any attempt at regulation is obviously a tyrannical attempt to induct the whole world into the sci-fi doom cult.

Sometimes I feel inadequate. I was clumsy when burning Justin M. Keyes and, regardless of whatever trust was lost, I haven’t felt better even after a week of making fun of fascists. Maybe burning somebody else will help? I’d like to share my notes on Dan “Opcode” Jonsson, a relatively-unknown right-wing influencer, before he gets popular enough to have money. I think he’s spooked on Lobsters recently, but he’s been uploading to Youtube multiple times per week and there’s plenty to explore.

If this is also too clumsy and leads to Jonsson deleting his YT channel: good, actually! It’s the only source of revenue that I can find for his opinions. So I’m not going to worry too much about it.

    click for notes
    • Daniel Jonsson
      • Unconfirmed, but lots of hints
      • Despite using Fedora, unhealthy amount of shilling for Omarchy
      • Reads a book purely because of a DHH recommendation 1
      • Lobsters
        • Appreciating DHH and PewDiePie 1
        • Apologizing for Omarchy with rhetorical exploration of definition of “distro” 1
      • YouTube
        • Right-wing guy in front of microphone opining about news headlines
          • Small fry: only about 1k subscribers currently
          • Recommended videos from a private window include Brodie Robertson, Jon Blow, Casey Muratori, Primeagen, Lex Friedman with guest DHH
            • So it seems that YT’s recommender thinks he’s part of the Standup podcast crew, ideologically
        • Tries out chatbot recommended by DHH 1
        • Defends DHH and Vaxry, supports Omarchy funding, calls Linux users “clowns” and “goblins”, complains about culture war and codes of conduct 1
        • Video defending The Quartering 1
        • Defends XLibre 1
          • Notably, says DEI is bad, says Trump is DEI, says Big Tech is bad and DEI
            • So, maybe not fascist, just stupid and prone to worshipping white supremacists? But that’s still a fascist
      • Mastodon: at DanOpcode at mastodon.social (deliberately breaking link because not sure whether Lemmy will ping Mastodon usernames)
        • Toot prominently features “88” in an image 1
          • Suggested alt text: “Approve sign in request [padlock with outline of person] Open your Authenticator app and approve the request. Enter the number if prompted. [box] 88”
          • On its own, just a dog-whistle; with the rest of the evidence, starting to sound like a Neo-Nazi
        • Will become monetized on YT after 1k subscribers 1
          • So… I guess he’s making money on YT now?
          • And he’s only sharing YT videos on Mastodon when they’re about relatively neutral tech topics; he uploads culture-war takes at least once per week but isn’t sharing them on Mastodon

Per AP, it looks like Anthropic has been encountering some interesting requests from certain international users.

Now the actual threat of creating missile guidance systems using Claude is massively overstated. Like, making sure the missile knows where it is is pretty much a solved problem at this point provided you have the time and ability to study it, and I would be incredibly surprised to hear that the Houthis (or anyone else) was in a situation where the control and guidance software for these weapons systems was more of a problem than sourcing the material components themselves.

However, in conjunction with the math proof debacle earlier in the week, I think the privacy implications of the growing reliance we’re expected to develop on these damned things are becoming inescapable. In the same way that crypto mining platforms will front-run and sandwich you, any information you put into the prompt will be used against you or for the company’s benefit.

Imagine a hypothetical future history of machine learning, perhaps one that focuses on the politics of AI in the 2020s. You may be thinking to yourself, Given the rapid pace of change, it’s hard to say what this book will contain, but there’s one thing I know for certain will not be in this book: Sheryl Crow’s Instagram account.

    Well—think again:

“We know and have always known that AI has the capacity to outsmart us and eliminate us in order to continue,” the “All I Wanna Do” singer wrote on Wednesday. “It will have the codes. It will have the capacity to eliminate our energy grids. And, it has the financial data of every single person on the planet.”

In the future, I think, we will remember this as the “Sheryl Crow moment”: The week that, effectively overnight, everyone—which is to say previously uninterested normies, previously skeptical pundits, opportunistic politicians and many other people who had never before heard the words “light cone” and whose browsers had never navigated to LessWrong—suddenly started taking “AI safety” seriously.

E: holy shit that Joe Allan quote. that guy.

It will have the capacity to eliminate our energy grids.

This would be a sensible course of action, since AI famously doesn’t require any significant source of energy to operate.

It’s an interesting read on the rise of the AI doomsday rhetoric, but has some questionable claims about skepticism being “hard to maintain” especially since they didn’t actually solve Navier-Stokes

“We know and have always known that AI has the capacity to outsmart us and eliminate us in order to continue,”

      …do we now?

“It will have the codes. It will have the capacity to eliminate our energy grids. And, it has the financial data of every single person on the planet.”

How? Why? What will it do with those things? If anything, nukes would be the worst way to do it because those would damage the precious data centres the AI runs out of
