I’ve never understood sacrificing battery for thinness.
I’m a grown ass man I can carry the weight, give me phone a heavy big ass battery. Give me a battery with a screen.
I understand the design engineers across the industry are just in a pissing contest on who can make it thinner. But c’mon…they’re just phones they don’t need to weigh a 8ball. They forgot about people like me who’d prefer to charge it once every couple days.
It is important to note that Gigaset is a German company, but since 2024 it is owned by V-Tech based in Hong Kong.
Unless it has comparable reparability it can hardly be considered an “answer to the Fairphone”
Repairability isn’t the only thing Fairphone is about, it’s also about, y’know, fairness in how it sources its materials. Which is part of the reason why said phones aren’t cheap.
It’s not the only thing. But you can bet that the 10/10 reparability score on ifixit is not an accident.
It’s great that other companies are sourcing their materials fairly, but if I have to toss the device after three years because the battery is dead and I can’t swap it, or because the screen cracks, the speaker died or whatever, I’ll take that with a grain of salt.However, the combination of a replaceable battery, wireless charging, and a waterproof chassis is a genuine unique selling point in the mid-range segment.
Didn’t read far enough to see if the Gigaset is more repairable than that.
I just wanted to add that Fairphone is more than just great repairability.
I made a previous comment praising it for its audio jack. Turns out I’m an idiot and misread a letter.
It still has no audio jack. I really can’t believe all these “sustainable” “no e-waste” companies are removing their audio jacks, when Samsung themselves have proven it can be done even on incredibly cheap phones and with water proofing.
Sadly, this seems to be another Fairphone moment. Their phones look genuinely nice, but I can’t justify a downgrade from my phone, which currently has an audio jack.
I can’t talk about this phone, but I have a story related to audio jacks. When I got my last phone I was bummed that there was no audio jack on it, but I decided to give USB-C adapters with an integrated DAC a chance and I was surprised how bad my previous phone with an integrated audio jack sounded in comparison. Maybe it’s a good thing we lose those cheap on board DACs and are forced to get us decent ones?
This is my experience as well. Moving the dac away from the radios and cpu, even just a bit, really helps. And the usb dacs are usually better to begin with. The same thing applies to computers, higher end audio for computers the first recommendation is to move the audio gear outside of the case. Audio interfaces for musicians are almost never inside a desktop case either, its usb or thunderbolt these days. And when 90% of the market is using Bluetooth headphones I think not having an audio jack built in is that big of a deal in 2026.
No. I do not need good audio quality on a phone, I need convenience.
And most of those cheap DACs already use the same chips phone motherboards used to have (and still have). Despite that, there are some phone models that have actually good DACs inside, and some companies also used to put very decent DACs on their phones (like LG or Sony).
