In Miami, FL, USA there was a Brazilian election being held where Brazilians were voting.

One could be a citizen of Brazil and be in Miami during an election and wish to cast their vote.

Sure, but this is the first time I’ve ever heard of a polling place being setup in a foreign country.

Same here. I looked it up and apparently Brazil mandates voting even if you don’t live in the country.

If you don’t vote they can refuse to grant or extend your passport:

In Brazil, people who fail to vote in an election are barred from obtaining a passport and subject to other restrictions until settling their situation before an electoral court or after they have voted in the two most recent elections.

              https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compulsory_voting

So polling places are a necessity in places with large numbers of Brazilians.

You have to vote but you can also justify your absence or just pay the extremely cheap fine, which is more of a hassle than voting but not always

Didn’t know they had compulsory voting. Interesting idea.

So polling places are a necessity in places with large numbers of Brazilians.

Not a necessity. I doubt all Brazillians in the US are traveling to those dozen or so cities they have polling places in.

Mail in voting is all I’ve ever heard of for overseas voting, though I pretty much only know about how the US runs elections.

Well, I’d assume the polling places are in locations with many Brazilians around.

As far as I know many countries allow citizens to vote in person in their embassies. International mail can take ages to arrive and if you want your vote have high odds of being counted having embassies send a bag of votes through their priority diplomatic mail is the safest bet.

With the US being quite big and hosting a large Brazilian diaspora, it makes sense to have a couple polling stations in major hubs. It looks like the polling places are in cities with Brazilian consulates anyway.

But with 2,000,000 Brazilians in the US, the consulates probably don’t have the capacity to host the vote. It’s probably just a minority voting in-person anyway but still.

I’m not arguing against it. I understand why they would do it. The idea is just surprising to me and I’m surprised the article only passed over it like it was common knowledge.

Oh yeah because forcing people to vote has definitely prevented shitheads from becoming president /s
