THIS IS NOT A DRILL

PlayStation’s “Bloodborne” is being developed into an R-rated animated feature for Sony Pictures that the studio says will embrace the carnage that made the game so popular.

Sanford Panitch, president of Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group, promised during the studio’s CinemaCon presentation that the long-rumored film will be “very true” to the gory spirit of “Bloodborne,” which follows a traveler who journeys into a gothic city full of nightmarish creatures.

“Bloodborne” was developed by FromSoftware and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment, which shares a parent company with Sony Pictures and PlayStation. The film is co-produced by PlayStation Productions, Lyrical Animation and creator and gamer Seán McLoughlin, better known by his pseudonym JackSepticEye. For the uninitiated, McLoughlin is a gamer who has spent years in the world of “Bloodborne,” where his digital adventures are tracked by 48 million online fans.

Lyrical Media, parent company of Lyrical Animation, is co-financing “Bloodborne” with Sony Pictures. McLoughlin is repped by CAA, Nicole Ambrose, Hansen Jacobson, and 42 West.

From the reddit announcement post:

Hey guys, I’m Jacksepticeye and as just announced at Cinemacon, Sony Pictures is officially making an animated Bloodborne feature film. I am producing this project and you have no idea how incredibly excited I am to finally be able to talk about it!! I am going to do everything in my power to make this the BEST Bloodborne adaptation possible. Not only is it my favourite game ever made but I know how truly passionate the fans of this game are and how much hunger they have for more of it.

I can’t share much about the project right now but man does it feel good to let you all know it’s happening!

HO-LY SHIT

You know what, if that’s what gets us more Bloodborne, fine. Has anyone watched any of Jacksepticeye’s short films? I don’t really know anything about him other than that he’s a videogames youtuber

Has anyone watched any of Jacksepticeye’s short films?

I wasn’t even aware he made short films! I guess his credentials are the he seems to be a die hard bloodborne fan? Maybe some producer experience?

What caught my attention is that Lyrical animation is a super recently established studio, (like, late 2025 recent) so no way to judge their work ; and sony pictures animation is not mentioned, but it would be great if some talent from the sony animation studio could get attached to this project in some way.

tbh, I don’t have the highest expectations for this. It must be suuuuper early in developement so we’ll have to wait a while and see what transpires.

Neither was I until I checked his wikipedia page! I had actually thought for a moment that he was the one that had done Iron Lung recently. I haven’t seen it, but I had heard that it was generally pretty solid (and not just in a good for a videogame adaption or good for being made by a youtuber sense, just actually good) and figured that that actually was a decent credential to make a Bloodborne one. I was, of course, totally wrong, because that was Markiplier

Oh right… I didn’t see the movie either but apparently Markiplier wrote, edited and directed thar film (!!!).

From what I gathrered, in Jacksepticeye’s case he has just a producer role, which is kinda nebulous but does get a say in the script and the creative direction, (I think it will be like an overseer role ) ultimately having other more experienced people on board as well.

I watched the announcement video of his and apparently this has been in the talks for 1.5 - 2 years aprox, but he spoke of the work in future tense so, pre production has probably no even started yet. I think it will be a long time before we see or hear anything more about it.

Well while I have no idea about Jack specifically, it is nice to know that there’s someone on board who is genuinely passionate about the material

I think it will be a long time before we see or hear anything more about it.

I highly suspect that we’ll hear more some time around the release of Alex Garland’s Elden Ring movie

Sony will do anything but greenlight a port, remake, or sequel.

I wouldn’t even hold out hope that this ever sees the light of day. Sony likes to cancel a lot of their film projects that they start.

Normally I’d agree. However, seeing as this legally speaking Sony’s IP and that they had ample opportunity to push out a remaster, remake, or sequel, they likely have a contract going with FromSoft to not touch the IP willy nilly. Here’s hoping that FS have greenlit this and are interested in a movie adaption themselves, making a cancellation unlikely. Not impossible, but less likely than if it were a movie for any other Sony IP

I don’t have a link at hand but I remember reading that while Sony owns the rights, it’s Fromsoft blocking a remake or remaster being made. Sony could unilaterally decide to make one, but they value their relationship with Fromsoft and Fromsoft doesn’t want to so that’s why it doesn’t happen. If I remember right Miyazaki wants it to happen, but he wants to do it himself. But he doesn’t really want to do it, at least not right now. So it just doesn’t happen instead.

How about they remake the game while they are at it?!?

I feel like this film could be a hit, but I will not hold my breath.

Does anyone know what Septic eye has made previously? I see he cameo’d in Free Guy, but do not see any indication he worked on the movie otherwise.

They could make a tie-in release to go along with the movie similarly to how it happened with the Until Dawn remake - the movie and remake came out roughly at the same time

gosh darnit I sure hope so, I replay BB every year at Halloween, and every year it feels just a little bit more dated, although I think its more the FPS and lighting that bother me now, as much as RTX can be a gimmick, the way Bloodborne paints with light could be an excellent showcase of RTX done right.

I’d still rather just the game on pc. I’ll give it a chance though because I found out recently that jack setpticeye had basically the same view on mr beast as me for longer than I knew about either of them.

I feel like if the Sekiro anime is a hit this will get a lot of energy put into it, and lead to a bunch of elden ring media

I heard this announcement and don’t get it at all. I love BB, but it doesn’t have a plot or compelling characters. Movies (and games, and books) used to have more than just vibes and lore.

It sucks, I guess this is the final state of a society of spectacle: all flash and no fire.

      doesn’t have a plot

There is a lot to work with actually. I think the “no plot” has more to do with the way from tells stories. If I were being paid I could write like 4 different bloodborne scripts. Look up the bloodborne graphic novels to see how the world inspires compelling stories.

      no compelling characters

Hard disagree. Even the NPC hunters in the chalices have unique, interesting designs that seem to point to deeper (pun he he) storylines. You meet summonable hunters, whose design and location speak to their story; and aggressive hunters who for some reason have made their home in the chalices among the pthumerians. The old hunter dlc alone has such an incredible story, and micolash and Mensis makes great foil villains for the second act.

Fair opinion, but I think there’s a lot they could do here. There is plot, there is lore, there are interesting characters to explore relations with. It’s never easy to translate a game into a movie properly, but I think there are a few angles to take here
