In order to maximize revenue. Selling 1,000 units at $50 profit apiece makes you more money than selling 400 units at $100 profit each.

politics @lemmy.world•Kagan warns constitutional "violation" in Supreme Court's Texas map ruling
02·3 days agoMy point isn’t that they should be concerned about their reputations. Rather, that by staying on the court, they’re lending the legitimacy of their names and reputations to an illegitimate court—thereby helping prop up an authoritarian regime. The sooner people broadly agree that the court is illegitimate, the sooner its power to support the regime crumbles.

politics @lemmy.world•Gavin Newsom opposes California ‘billionaire tax’ as he eyes 2028 White House bid
1·3 days agoI guess I expect more from a progressive leader than “Welp what can we possibly do on climate in the face of consumerism?” I think there is a clear path forward, and that’s making investments to move off of fossil fuels. Part of that means stopping government handouts to fossil fuel companies, stopping the lowering of CAFE standards, etc.
And before the usual: “Oh but we don’t have the political will.” … I’d counter that, yes, the mainstream Republicans and Democrats that are beholden to fossil fuel companies don’t have the political will, because of course they don’t. They know on what side their bread is buttered. And that’s exactly why we have to stop electing them and primary them all, putting progressives in their place.
(I also wasn’t particularly impressed with the interviewee in that interview, even if she did have some good comedic timing. I realize she’s a writer and not a politician or talking head used to generating pithy soundbites, but still.)

33·3 days agoI don’t understand why the liberal justices stay there. It’s clearly a kangaroo court, issuing unsigned rulings that have no basis in law. Sure, if the liberal justices resigned, they’d just get replaced with MAGA flunkies. But that would have no material affect on rulings, and by staying, the liberals are lending the court legitimacy. Take away that fig leaf, and the illegitimacy will be even more obvious than it already is.

13·3 days agoJon Stewart is no progressive, and some of his takes are frustratingly bad. Just this Monday, he made the case to his interviewee that there’s basically nothing we can do about climate change except maybe a little carbon scrubbing after the fact.

News@lemmy.world•Zohran Mamdani says he still believes Trump is a 'fascist' and 'despot' after White House meeting
86·15 days agoCopypasta of my comment from another thread: Trump has apparently just recently realized (as of the election results around the U.S.) that he’s hugely unpopular and that it threatens his power / his grip on the Republicans. And that it stems in part from how he has ignored the affordability issue ever since he got elected.
Then someone like Mamdani waltzes into the picture and absolutely cleans up when running on affordability… and not just “uh yeah I will totally lower the price of eggs” either. So Trump sees an opportunity to cozy up to this affordability guy in the hopes that some of the voter goodwill that Mamdani earned on that topic rubs off on Trump. He’s desperate not to lose his grip on power.

4·15 days agoPretty good. But now you can almost see the desperation bleeding through the orange makeup. I think he’s beginning to realize that the moral arc of the universe is actually not so long—and bends toward comeuppance.

1·15 days agoYou’re right that he has no moral compass—but I think that means any movement he makes on affordability can only ever be skin-deep. He’d just as soon sell out the entire populace if he gets a better offer in regards to retaining power.

That works during a bubble. What happens though after the bubble when demand presumably plummets?
