Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•It is now better than ever to find alternatives to fossil fuels, do you have any plans?English
3·1 day agoAbsolutely. They do tend to be quite a bit more expensive per watt though. From my research you can get cheap panels and just plug them into a LiPo4 battery or even lead acid batteries as well. It’s just that batteries (even though they’ve gotten a lot cheaper) are still expensive enough to nearly double the cost of the system in many cases so the plug-in option with 400 watts of panels etc gives you the best bang for the buck for sure. But it’s not legal or possible in many US states (though that is changing fast)

28·1 day agoBiking (e-bikes are great if you can afford one and greatly increase range and decrease effort in many environments)
Installing solar (I’m currently renting but my state is debating a new law which seems likely to pass modeled on the Utah law - and others which started in Europe - which allows small solar systems to be plugged directly into a home outlet to supplement energy needs with minimal cost)
I agree that the tech is very impressive. To paraphrase another comment I made in a post about the tech reveal video (which apparently was also unpopular based on the number of downvotes) I think many people are completely misunderstanding how it works. It doesn’t change textures or 3d models (what are often called game ‘assets’) at all. The only thing it changes is lighting and for that it does use AI (machine learning) to create a much more realistic lighting presentation. You may find this hard to believe but lighting can dramatically alter appearance. The notion that it sexifies or slopifies everything by making faces sexier etc is just not true except to the extent that the lighting changes have this perceived effect on the characters for you.
That said, concerns about artistic intent vs these changes are definitely valid here for these demos since it’s a very different look to how the original devs intended and Nvidia have basically modded this into existing games which weren’t designed around it to show it off. This has the affect of some of it looking a bit off I agree. In the future, when devs can decide to create assets around it or not I think those concerns will become less relevant. That said, PC power users and modders will likely hack it into a game if they want to even if the devs don’t enable it as an option. Modding and hacks are just the nature of PC gaming though. I don’t see a bunch of people crying about artistic intent because someone modded Thomas the Tank Engine into a game etc.

Technology@lemmy.world•How Much Do LLMs Hallucinate in Document Q&A Scenarios? A 172-Billion-Token Study Across Temperatures, Context Lengths, and Hardware Platforms [TLDR: 25%]English
1·10 days agoMy biggest takeaway here is that choosing the context length and (to a lesser extent) the temperature carefully is important for reducing hallucinations. I expected model families to vary widely between themselves but not for context length to have such a massive impact tbh.
It seems from this like reducing context length in applications where it isn’t essential for the model to hold very large amounts of context simultaneously would be best practice no?

57·12 days agoAnd diesel prices (which underpin essentially all industry and production) have gone even more brrrrrrrrrr. Which means just about everything else will be shooting up in price soon if the strait remains closed…
I have only played a few hours but need to play more. Wish I could help but don’t know. Very cool and unique game. Enjoy.

6·1 month agoGodspeed. I also nearly beat the game and then put it down and forgot most of it so ended up beating it almost twice. It’s a great game. Still haven’t finished the Blood and Wine DLC though…

6·1 month agoFinally got around to playing Caves of Qud and it took me a while to figure it out and dial in the controls on Steam Deck but now it’s starting to become clear just how insane this game is…

Privacy@lemmy.ml•I'm tired of LLM bullshitting. So I fixed it.English
0·2 months agoYes, because making locally hosted LLMs actually useful means you don’t need to utilize cloud-based and often proprietary models like ChatGPT or Gemini which Hoover up all of your data.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•I'm tired of LLM bullshitting. So I fixed it.English
0·2 months agoThis is very cool. Will dig into it a bit more later but do you have any data on how much it reduces hallucinations or mistakes? I’m sure that’s not easy to come by but figured I would ask. And would this prevent you from still using the built-in web search in OWUI to augment the context if desired?

politics @lemmy.world•Deciding To Win – Toward A Common Sense Renewal of the Democratic PartyEnglish
1·5 months agoMuch of this reads like what the Democrats’ strategy has already been for the last 10 years or so with some additional calls towards a “moderate” “centrism” that has not proven to be as popular as left populist policies with most Americans. And a lot of it seems confused or just wrong. For example, Medicare for All is not an unpopular policy. Last I checked it it was polling at around a 60% approval.
Even if your politics are more centrist, I don’t see how this represents a substantive shift in any way. It’s minor tinkering around the edges or slightly altering messaging. That’s what the moment calls for? That’s the key to success and the way to fight back against an increasingly overt and ascendant strain of fascism in the country? If that’s what the Democratic leadership thinks then one must honestly wonder if the party is institutionally incapable of the change that would need to happen to actually win elections and improve their godawful approval ratings. And based on their donor base, this shouldn’t actually be surprising. The leadership is still utterly captured by and beholden to wealthy interests that would rather jump off a bridge than acknowledge that what Americans want is a party that will fight for meaningful material benefits in their standard of living as this implies meaningfully raising taxes and imposing costs or regulations on their businesses to ensure benefits for regular working class people who are struggling mightily.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Is Lemmy an effective alternative to Reddit?English
1·1 year agoAs a ‘front page of the internet’ it has been a pretty great replacement for me as it’s where I go each day to just see what’s going on. However, due to the smaller size you do lose a lot of the activity in more niche communities and the sheer volume of posts/comments compared to Reddit. That’s the biggest downside. Still, you also lose the incessant ads/bad UI/UX decisions and ever accelerating late stage capitalism driven enshittification so that’s a big plus.

Sounds cool. Gave it a minute or two and can’t deal with the banter haha not my cup of tea.
