Dont worry, theyll get a bailout and youll be on the hook for everything. Privitize the gains, socialize the losses
My GTX 1060 has to hang on a little longer…
I’m so happy I bought a 4090 and 64GB of RAM in 2023. This shit is ridiculous.
Why? Are you cold? There are better ways to start a fire.
I don’t need a 5090 though. My 2070 is still going alright, don’t really see a reason to replace it right now.
i thought a 5090 was another version of 5150 but til
I’m not an economist but I don’t think that’s how that works.
If the economy crashes, there’s a chance the chip fabs go under, especially if they’re holding the trillions in debt hot potato.
Eh, they’re sitting on tons of cash. Nvidia, AMD and the AI companies may pass debt around, but TSMC is being paid money for their services. RAM and NAND companies, too, made record profits last year.
They’re expanding, but conservatively.
I’m out of the loop. What is a 5090?
GPU
I can’t help but think someone who doesn’t know what a 5090 is would be helped with the letters GPU.
I mean, they can now search “5090 GPU” instead of just a number and see themselves what a 5090 is, if someone managed to use lemmy, they can manage to use a search engine
Tbf they could already just search 5090 and likely get relevant results, the number isn’t that popular in other contexts. I opened a new private browsing session and the first two results for just “5090” were nvidia and a local electronics retailer (I used google, it gives you results by country by default)
Yeah ofc but with such generic wording you cannot be sure to get the right thing, it happens to me way too often, 2 words is the minimum to get decent results for most searches
It helped me a lot :D
But millions of virtual waifus and half-hearted vibe-coded projects on GitHub will die!
That’s what the 5090 is for. Excellent for running local LLMs.
Better get two so that there’s enough power for the v-girl to give live commentary on the gameplay.
That’s a sacrifice I want to make right now!
I will be shocked if computer parts, aren’t, right now, the most affordable they are ever likely to be for the rest of your life.
Prices will fall once China builds enough capacity. So maybe around 2030.
There’s no guarantee those parts will be open - look at the locked down proprietary chips that come out of Chinese factories with binary blobs for drivers right now.
Also, they’ll be tariff’d to hell in some countries for what will be MOSTLY bogus security concerns.
Also, China isn’t stupid. They’re not going to mark their hardware prices at where they used to be - they’re going to put them EVER so slightly underneath the captive market prices AI companies are paying to the western manufacturers. So yes, they’ll be a LITTLE cheaper, but “affordable” is never happening again, and the trendline will STILL go up.
My pet conspiracy theory is they’re trying to take compute power away from the proletariat so it can’t be used against them in the coming AI wars.
I also believe they want to take our compute power BUT I think they just want to turn it subscription based (e.g. cloud gaming)
They kinda missed the boat on that one. We passed the point of diminishing returns in graphics hardware years ago and now the only reason to get a high-end card is conspicuous consumption.
Poor corporations, they were too slow ;-; /s
If I understood correctly you’re saying that the hardware is not improving that fast, right? I had no idea that was the case
More that games already look good enough that the improvements from better hardware are getting harder and harder to notice.
But from what I’ve heard (at least one year ago) modern games still have the latest hardware listed as recommended
Game developers are following the same trendline as software developers - be lazy in your programming, chug unnecessary resources, and let the end user spend their way out of it.
As an example, I think Clair Obscure is one of the best games I’ve played in years, but those unnecessary, egregious particle effects in EVERY single environment with NO ability to just turn them OFF are development malpractice.
No one needs a 5090.
Yeah ehh, I know it’s a meme but maybe say 5070 or even a 5080
Fuck it. Gimme a 6000.
Just buy 2x 3000s /s
RX 9060 XT gang
No.
I was going to grab a 9070 XT, but I also wanted to start mainly using a local LLM instead of contributing to data center use, so I snagged a used 7900 XTX for $750 off eBay for the greater VRAM capacity. Works like a charm, and the local Qwen model is performing great. Totally worth it. It’s my first Radeon card because I wanted to dodge the ridiculous Nvidia AI markups, but it’s already showing signs of running better with my Linux machine, so I don’t expect I’ll be going back to the green menace.
Why give the company at the epicenter of the coming financial crash your money?
This is like hoping for the sub-prime market to crash so that you can afford a Bear-Stearns home loan at a favourable interest rate.
the assets the loans were on got significantly cheaper after the mortgage crash
If the economy crashes we are the ones who are gonna be fucked… I don’t think I can afford a 5090 before or after.
I am fascinated that people think if only the economy crashes everything will be back to normal. No, we are all fucked. The billionaires have already fucked us all.
Its like how people think they will be able to by a house if there is a housing market crash like corporations won’t still be the highest bidders.
if you have USD/other currency but not assets the economy crashing is good if you are a wageslave it’s bad.
I’m sure all of the Zimbabweans hoarding some large denimination $1,000 stacks of cash under their bed were still doing great after the 12mil% hyperinflation caused the central bank to issue $100,000,000,000,000 notes.
Did you remove your own upvote?
Perhaps the upvote was in their own country’s social currency, but then rapid hyperinflation happened since they commented. Lemmy was just showing us its value adjusted by the current exchange rate.
Not if the economy crashing causes increased inflation and interest rates, then you’d wish you had assets that hold value rather than currency which will lose its value.
Although, given the numbers most Americans live paycheck to paycheck and don’t have a wealth of assets or cash.
Just gotta wait for the strategic oil reserves to run out while diaperman keeps closing the strait, and it’ll be a big ol’ happy happy
While it is true that they are at their lowest levels in a long time, the reality is that between domestic production that we have available and the reserves, even if our usage continued to grow, we still have a few years worth before we would actually genuinely run out.
You don’t need this.
