While I don’t entirely disagree, this argument is solved in ironically short order: video games and their puzzle/barrier-sequence predecessors predate RPGs by decades, if not centuries. Ergo, the latter’s doing the retraining, and to the opposite —which flips the argument. Furthermore, if your group eschews a Session 0 to assess and refine the table’s interests, then there’s nothing to blame but your own selves. A master craftsman doesn’t blame his tools, nevermind that doing so’d actively hobble his growth beyond the relevant mistake.
In short, no one’s forcing anyone to play with people with wildly differing styles, interests, tendencies, etc., so let’s instead own our shortcomings rather than blame the veritable cornucopia of gaming options, these days. 😁🖖🏼
I genuinely wish you well in your gaming adventures on both side of the flat surface, and in case other readers are unfamiliar: Daggerheart, Blades In The Dark, and many others have a sort out Session 0 baked into character generation, so that could be an easy solution. (It’s an essential and largely expected step.)
