Yeah its a tough one. I’m inclined to say everything new sucks, and while a lot of the time its true, I think its actually because now you need an insanely complex filter to get anything good. Back in the day, it was top musicians at top studios rolling tape at hundreds of dollars an hour and you HAD to be good or get out.

Also, before internet everything wasnt so homogenized. Now everything sounds like everything else. (Not to mention every person using a Scarlett 2i2 and the same pack of plugins. Booooring). I havent really heard anything inventive in music in the last 10 to 15 years. Maybe something weird and “shock value” (bands that have 32 genres in a song or mix metal with folk instruments…yawn. Its been heard a thousand times). Usually when I’m amazed by something its something I missed from 30-40 years ago thats amazing and no one knows about.

Theres maybe 3 groups I actually get excited about new music today. And I’ll even say theyre not super inventive. But really, its all been done. So I say still get out there and make music, but its harder than its ever been and a lot of people shy away from anything made post 2024 because of slop potential, which will be far far worse in the next years.

Oh no, I discover tons of stuff, mostly algorithm free, I’m just saying nothing is really new. Music prettty much did it all by about 2012 or so, maybe even before , theres nothing more to do except mix stuff around. Theres really nothing exciting about music now except maybe watching talented people play difficult parts live.

Just my take but I feel thats when every avenue of music was finished. All rock had done by the mid 90s. Then when electronic got really saturated and modern dubstep came in in the 2010s (like, it got mainstream), that was pretty much the last unique “sound” that could be created. I dont think theres anything someone could show me that would truly blow my mind, something I actually hadn’t heard before. Ive heard it all (genre-wise).

Would have been so awesome to grow up in the 70s seeing all the great innovative music changes. Pretty much from 1990 onward it got less and less unique.
