Just had my 50th birthday party last weekend, got a huge house in Noosa for 4 nights with 13 of my closest friends, a bunch flying in from interstate. It was deeply, powerfully satisfying to just hang out with the people that I care about the most for an extended period of time. Lots of people there who hadn’t hung out before, or had only met a couple of times, and everyone just clicked immediately, it was exactly what I wanted. Almost everyone there has had a really rough year in some way and you could see the stress evaporating off them like steam.

Heaps of the people there have since commented to me how much it reminded them that being around good people is the best way to relieve the pain of living in a world that’s on fire. Time goes by so fucking fast at our age, you plan to catch up with everyone but by the time you get around to it half the year is gone already. I’m going to organise a bunch of regular events for everyone to get into their calendar, monthly or bi-monthly games days, lunches, dinners, etc, make sure I’m spending time with the people I care about as much as possible.

Life is short, and it gets shorter every day. Make sure you’re spending as much of it as you can with the people you love and that love you.

Happy birthday, sword fighting dog person!

You make good points. Sometimes I wish I had some friends to catch up with.
