"Joe Biden’s former commerce secretary Gina Raimondo has decided that UBI in response to AI is the thing to fear most. At the Reagan National Economic Forum, she said: “I personally think it’s like the end of America.”

She is now heading up a newly-launched, extremely well-funded organization to make sure the country reaches for anything but a basic income in response to AI.

On the one hand, while selling themselves to investors, Big Tech says it can eventually automate almost any job a human can do. What they don’t want is any responsibility for their actions. I’d expect conservatives to be against UBI, but Gina Raimondo, the person heading this up, is a Democrat.

The upside? This conversation is getting harder to ignore, and Gina Raimondo is bringing more attention to it, even if it’s with dud ideas. In years of paying attention to this topic (AI/robots capable of most work), I’ve yet to come across a solution that isn’t some form of Socialism or UBI.

So give it all you’ve got, Conservatives & Centrists; I doubt you’ll come up with any workable alternatives, despite your $500 million funding.

Conservatives feel so strongly that socialism will be unsuccessful that they’re willing to spend billions to stop it.

What will the states be testing? Wage insurance. Incentives for companies to retrain rather than lay off. AI career coaching. Redeployment to new jobs.

Obviously this shit won’t actually work, I guess the play is to pretend to do something to delay public outrage until it is too late and democracy in the US is fully dead and buried

These just sound like forcing people into jobs whether they’re needed or not, with the government paying for it. Why the fuck would you pay companies to maintain unnecessary jobs when you could just pay the individuals?

It’s covering the banks who caused the problem instead of the people just trying to live during the subprime mortgage crisis in 2008 all over again

Amazon, Anthropic, Microsoft, and the OpenAI Foundation are anchor partners. Behind them sits a wall of corporate and philanthropic money: Blackstone, General Motors, IBM, Eli Lilly, Mastercard, Deloitte, UPS, Cisco, Workday, Arnold Ventures, and a dozen more.

No need to read the article to know who this Centrist Democrat is funded by, or who thinks her ideas are “good”

End the gluttony of billionaires perhaps. So yes it would be the end of something but the beginning of something better.

Looks like the party system in the US is a coin toss between heads they win and tails you lose. The US needs a NDP new democratic party since only the right wing is represented there.

Whose bread I eat: his song I sing.

It means the wealthy won’t help. The current system and its governing bodies don’t help. And they’ll be shocked when the population is willing to jump to a completely different system.

Kind of begs the question “should America be ended?” And also, would it end all of America? Like the entire half of the world called America? Or just one specific part of America?
