FDA green-lights powerful new flu vaccine in world-first
Clinical trials showed it is 27% more effective than conventional flu shots, which have used the same basic technology for over 70 years. The mRNA approach also cuts manufacturing time from 6 months to 2 to 3 months, allowing faster responses to an infectious disease that kills up to 52,000 Americans annually.
The approval covers two of the most vulnerable populations for flu—adults aged 50 to 65 and adults aged 65 and up—on the condition that Moderna will run a further clinical trial in the older group.
