I wonder how many blacks were in Soviet Armenia at that time? Same percentage as in America? Somehow, I doubt it. I have always gotten a chuckle out of countries with relatively homogenous populations raising a hue and cry over America’s racial issues.

Hell, my Puritan ancestors probably took up arms to wipe out Northeast tribes that were on land they wanted. Civilizations spread, cultures clash, there are winners and losers in the flow and that tide never stops moving back and forth.

It’s not so much cruel and cold hearted as it is resigned to accepting something that historically can not be changed. It’s not the only place it happened. That’s my point. Read a bit of world history and the full scope of humanity’s inhumanity to each other becomes crystal clear, and you realize this ins’t the worst thing.

Have you read of the Barbary Slave trade? Millions of Europeans were kidnapped across the southern european coasts from France, Spain and Portugal and sold into slavery across North Africa and the Arab world. Thing is, they were not allowed to have families and were killed when they get old. Not released into retirement (unless they converted, but they couldn’t return to their home countries)… killed. There’s a reason there aren’t large minoritites of Europeans in North Africa.
Could you imagine if that had happened to the slaves in America?
Have you investigated the Holodomor that was ignored by Stalin who rebuffed European and American aid to alleviate it?
How about Mao’s Long March or Stalin’s gulags, the Japaese Rape of Nanjing, Pol Pot’s Khmer Rouge wholesale slaughter of the Hmong and other indigenous tribes in Cambodia in the 1970’s… Shaka Zulu’s conquest of southern Africa? The Chinese in Tibet?
It’s a world of misery, and as I have maintained, it’s easy to see America’s place in the story… but the reality is it’s just one chapeter in a very long, sordid tale.
What you see as cold-hearted is just resignation to the stupidity of it.

Most evil? No. Top 5? Yeah, probably. There aren’t many historical events more evil than chattel slavery, and its effects are still being felt today, 161 years later.

LOL! Yakut, Chechen, Ukranian, Kazakh, Byelorus, Uzbek, Georgian, Mongol and those are just off the top of my head. Let’s not even get into the Jews and Muslims who’ve been systematically represed. Which goes to prove my point that the Soviet Union, was famous for highlghting American racism, from the point of it’s Rus-dominated, centrally planned, oppressive government, while again, ignoring the plight of it’s own marginalized population.

The Soviet Union was made of many different nations and ethnicities and it was the Rus who determined the fates of them. But of course the proletariat all lived completely free and happy in the “equality” of the motherland…
Even today, there are a huge number of Yakut who are being conscripted to be turned into hamburger on the fields of Ukraine while the actual Russians - with relatively larger amounts of money - have managed to flee the country to avoid their draft. But… there’s no “white” privilege there…
There were plenty of non-black ethnic groups that the Soviets treated poorly. (Though it was mainly Stalin and he treated everyone poorly.)
Indeed. However, the issue that was painted - and is still painted to a degree - is that somehow, American racism was/is a symbol of western failure… And they always seemed to ignore the oppression in their own societies.
I’ve always maintained that shitting on the US is an easy thing to do since most of our history is a fairly open book. Go look into other countries and even into non-western nations and their own inter-racial, inter-tribal, inter-religious strife and what you see with a bit of digging, isn’t any different.
It’s human nature writ large across time and place.
America didn’t have a racism problem because it was uniquely heterogenous, the legacy of slavery meant it was particularly racist and segregated. Racism is a problem everywhere, but we need to stop grabbing on to the comforting lie that what we had was just the natural consequence of demographics.
And the Soviet Union had a whole ton of ethnicities. I don’t know about Armenia specifically, but that is right down at the confluence of multiple cultures, so we’re not looking at somewhere like Sweden.
When you’re dealing with the Soviet Union (which I remember as an actual nation, not just a line item in a history book) you were dealing with a nation that hid a phenomenal amount of abuse to any and every ethnicity that wasn’t actual Rus. To this day, my father’s family can not get information on our ancestry from Russia because of my ancestors ethnicity.
