Ed Sheeran’s weekend shows at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, the venue owned by pro-Israel billionaire Robert Kraft who had pushed for Macklemore’s removal from the tour over his pro-Palestine remarks, have been cancelled.
“Due to the severe weather warnings in place in Boston and across New England throughout the weekend and following consultation with local officials, we have made the difficult decision to cancel the Ed Sheeran concerts at Gillette Stadium,” concert promoter Messina Touring posted on Instagram on Friday morning.
“The decision was made with the safety of fans, staff and everyone involved in the shows as a top priority.”
Messina Touring said that any tickets purchased through Ticketmaster would be automatically refunded. Outside of Ticketmaster, refunds are currently available at the point of purchase.
It is 100% possible that this is legitimately the reason.
But it’s also very interesting that this announcement came shortly after Massachusetts attorney general forced them to offer refunds to anyone who was upset about the changed line up.
I don’t think they’d forfeit the rest of their revenue on the show just because they were forced to forfeit some.
At some point the cost of putting the show on would exceed the revenue from the remaining ticket holders. Add in the additional bad press with photos of him playing at the stadium that kicked it all off and they might be happy to write it off to a weather disruption and potentially claim insurance and/or avoid liability for the cancellation.
With the amount of other news surrounding the upcoming weather I think it’s legit, too.
Which I think makes it even funnier. The concert was never going to happen and Sheeran and Kraft tanked their reputations for nothing.
Kraft getting charged for visiting a “massage parlor” in Florida a while back didn’t do him any favors either.
