Yeah, I used to do more WM stuff, but GNOME is like… Halfway there, anyway, and I just haven’t felt like customizing the look of my PC in a while, which is where WMs really shine for me in comparison to GNOME

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Why do people who try to convince others to switch to metric focus so much on the conversions?
1·7 days agoOh, absolutely. And all of those are better arguments than “It’s easy to go from meters to km! Just shift a few decimals!” despite the latter being the more common argument I see.
And yeah, imperial isn’t base 12 either. I do think base 12 numbers would be better, and I would have exactly 0 reservations about metric if we did, though it’s not like I’m exactly anti-metric now. I use it probably about as much as I use imperial day-to-day

2·7 days agoYeah, for small things metric’s actually great. I tend to use it to make my coffee

1·7 days agoFor evidence of the mile scale vs foot scale bit:
We have 2 measurements between that we don’t really use anymore. Chains, and furlongs most notably (8 furlongs to a mile, 10 chains to a furlong, 100 links to a chain, 4 inches to a link). The middle distance is just yards now. 50 yards, etc.

2·7 days agoThis wall is 9 feet wide, how many 2’8" shelves can I hang on it?
I cam guarantee you’re likely to do the same thing I did, which is just “That’s really close to 1m shelves, so it’s 3 with gaps.”

3·7 days agoI tend to use grams for everything in the kitchen, because ounces are usually too big for what I need. Admittedly that’s mostly “Making coffee,” but still the point stands xD

4·7 days agoHonestly, metric does have some benefits over imperial, it’s just I so often hear the one place it really doesn’t. It being a standard is useful! Rockets have exploded because of the US’s stuff being imperial, because they didn’t convert it to metric before sending it off. I don’t remember the exact story, admittedly

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Why do people who try to convince others to switch to metric focus so much on the conversions?
33·7 days agoI mean, it does have the noted benefit of down-converting between units being cleaner. 1/3 of a foot is 4 inches. 1/3 of a meter is 333.333…mm

52·7 days agoEven then I don’t find the weight particularly useful, because it only applies to liquids with the same density of water.
Also 1 gallon is 231 cubic inches. Idk why, but it is, and I’ve already looked into all of the weird imperial measurements previously xD

61·7 days agoIn order:
- Dividing by 3
- Dividing by 4
- Dividing by 6
- Dividing by 7
- Dividing by 8
- Dividing by 9
It’s really, really bad at handling dividing by anything but 1, 2, 5, or 10. Dividing by 3 is very frequently useful imo
Mine was a meme machine for a while. Old thinkpad with Arch and i3 gaps, switched to Sway, then GNOME

1·8 days agoI mean… If we’re talking about changing spelling due to pronunciation, there are other words much more fitting. Enough, women, ambition, etc. That’s how we get things like the Ghoti spelling of “Fish.” Or, for a Minecraft reference, ghoughpteighbteau instead of potato.
Language is weird, and it’s hard to map spelling to sound 1:1, especially over time
I mean… It’s been a thing in transfem circles since ~2015, where femboy didn’t gain much mainstream relevance until ~2021. So yeah, it likely did stick because of transfems in IT as a profession/hobby

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What’s a cheap purchase that’s completely changed your life?
2·8 days agoNot much, admittedly. It’s a Lenovo Thinkpad T430 if you want to look up the spec sheet. But it was enough to start me down a path of being more hands-on with my software, and making me more aware of how kinda bullshit it is that a lot of the more basic software flat won’t run on older hardware. I get that there will be cutoffs, like going from 32 to 64 bit, where there are fundamental incompatibilities, but it’s kinda bullshit that you need 16gb of RAM to just load the news, or watch videos that were on the internet before this thing released.
I’ve upgraded it a bit since (more RAM, faster CPU), but without it it still did do a lot compared to what you’d expect from a then 12 year old laptop. It did handle some light gaming, reading things, some websites loaded fine, mostly the ones that were just text with a few images, playing music, etc. Biggest problem has been the battery life, which is expected out of an old battery. Lasts about 45 minutes

Rookie numbers. My main one is 14, my older one is almost 25.

Seems to be back up. If something’s down, I usually throw it into Down for Everyone or Just Me, or just wait for a day. Stuff goes down sometimes
