No worries, my main criticism was mostly cuisine based. But seriously, if you ever want to impress someone with a home cooked meal, risotto is a really easy but flashy meal. I honestly think it’s one of the easiest ways to cook rice.

Lol, risotto takes like 30 min to make. The hardest part about putting a PC together isn’t the assembly, it’s picking out what parts you want and then buying them all.
For me it’s dealing with my indecision of balancing cost and performance and then the obsessive need to find the best deal for every part I picked.
But yeah my main point was I think you’re overestimating how long risotto takes to cook.

21·2 days agogas stove on the other hand is only about 30-40% efficient.
Maybe on a really old stove top? High efficiency burners with the right pan can be 85-95% efficient.

35·2 days agoYeah, unfortunately in my area gas range is actually more efficient than induction because the electricity is mainly by natural gas anyways.

politics @lemmy.world•MAGA declares war on the Catholic Church
161·4 days agoWell… The problem is that the Catholic Church does not act as a unified body, especially in America.
Trad Catholics in America have been hating the pope since basically Vatican II. That doesn’t mean that “they are at war with the church”, just that organizations like Opus Dei are actively trying to pull the church further to the right.
So while some of the church maybe doing good, the other part of the church is ending abortion rights and partaking in other crazy shit on the supreme court.
Why? The government has better purchasing power than any private corporation and most things, but especially infrastructure become more economic at a greater scale.
Another point is that utilities are natural monopolies, and that the government building and controlling the infrastructure would cut out the profit motive that is currently driving up the cost.

Any kind of rotary tool/machine really. If your ring gets grabbed by any spinning equipment it can pull you into the machine or deglove your finger.
I don’t really wear my ring unless I’m going out somewhere nice with my wife because I work with a lot of heavy machinery.

32·16 days agoAlso a brat who spent around 16 years growing up on various military bases… The problem with this idea is the expectation that enlisted men are knowledgeable enough to recognize an illegal order, while simultaneously being stupid enough to put their necks on the line to refuse a direct order from an officer.
In the military as an enlisted man, you are guilty until proven innocent. It would be easier to get off knowingly participating in a war crime than to knowingly refuse an illegal order.
The idea that American servicemen are trained to recognize and refuse illegal order is a fallacy. My dad did 26 years as an enlisted man and eventually made chief, he will openly admit to having zero faith in the US military ability to do the right thing.

18·16 days agoYeah, the duality of pretending to be a state who cares about stopping discrimination is clashing with decades of supporting organizations that just so happen to be run by literally Nazis.
The National Task Force to Combat Antisemitism is breaking ties with the heritage foundation over the whole Tucker Carlson Nick Fuentes interview. Like…it took Nick Fuentes to alert you that the Heritage Foundation was a bunch of neo Nazi, not all the Nazi shit you’ve been doing together?
Of course during the interview the leader of the NTFC said they were still primarily focused on the antisemitism in the “Left”, but we’re now going to shift some attention to this new development of antisemitism on the alt right.

10·21 days agoI mean, it’s kinda been the standard since Regan legalized stock buybacks.

In a place like Texas… More than likely.
In a state that’s closer to a swing state it’s easier to over do it with gerrymandering and spread out your support too thin. In a state where there’s a lot more support to spread out… Accidentally fucking up is a little more challenging to do.
Plus, I would find it difficult to believe that political operatives wouldn’t be able to grasp the idea that things like the Latino vote from the last election might not be as dependable this year and react accordingly.
