  • MetaBrainz is a non-profit dedicated to open-source and open-data. So if people don’t like the algorithms LB has integrated, they can just build their own.

About not delegating your brain to machines, that’s a fair point, and I would encourage people to consciously choose where to use machines and where to use their brain. If you enjoy searching for music, it would be foolish to delegate it to a machine. For me personally though it’s usefull, using an algorith here allows me to spend energy on other things that are equally stimulating for my brain. I particularly like LBs ‘fresh releases’ feature, which gives you heads up about new releases by artists that you’ve listened to.

  • now I’m saturated on the front of funny raccoon pictures, they’ve become meaningless. It sounds like a lot of fun to have everything at your disposal all the time, but it renders everything meaningless. Of course, this is an exaggeration, there are good things too, I like having all or most paintings available when I look up a painter for instance. But it is true that things being harder to find, makes them more special when you do. Reminds me of this Stewart Lee bit where he talks about how he spoke to his grandparents about the trouble they had to go through when they wanted a sex-mask. Where as now you just order them on amazon, you should ask your grand parents how they managed their kinks back in the day.

  • Yes, it’s a mirror, that shows us people are very emotional, and prone to react to emotional triggers. The algorithm has figured this out and is using it to maximize engagement. People will not stop reacting to these emotional triggers. Sure it’s commendable to avoid these rage-baits and pay attention to other things, and some will be better at this than others. But to think that people en masse can choose to not be caught and manipulated by these algorithms seems really naive. I know tons of people who spend more time on TikTok than they wish they did, but it’s hard to resists something that’s so cleverly optimized towards you, as Yuval Noah Harari says it: it’s hacking our brain.

  • Yes, it gives you what you respond to, it steers towards engagement. So it provides content which has a strong emotional response because the strong emotions drive us to engage. Anger and resentment are very strong driving powers here. I don’t doubt that what you’re saying about how the things you engage with, and how you steer the algorithm or the algorith steers you. But that doesn’t disprove the fact that algorithms are generally making our debates more angry, it would just suggest that you are less vulnerable to this.
