  • LLMs will never be people. Computers might be, one day in the very distant future. But literally every piece of the current AI hype train is just hype. LLMs could, maybe, at best, be a single piece of a much larger puzzle for bringing consciousness into being. But the “Just Add More Compute Bro!” mantra is just tech bros doing their market hype thing. It has as much chance of giving rise to consciousness as my PC has whenever I add another hard drive.

  • having taken another toke and put some thought into it, there are a variety of ways this pizza’s appearance could have been salvaged. parsley, arugula, some actual cheese. putting the peppers on top of the sauce so they give a bit more color. i didnt have arugula or cheese in my kitchen at the time and i dunno, the rest just didnt occur to me. i leave it to the next cook to solve that, all i can say is i thought it was a bit unusual and also damn tasty, so worth posting.

at least the general consensus seems to be i posted in the correct sub!

  • I mean, sure, but it is people’s natural tendency. As long as there are systems in place for people to migrate services it’s not such a big deal. If someone asks me what social media I use, I say Piefed. If they asked me for a link, I’d link them my instance. But if someone were coming in totally cold and just needed to pick one, I wouldn’t fault them for defaulting to The Big One. I’d certainly prefer they do that over staying on Facebook or whatever.

And that’s more of a federation problem anyway, in the case of operating systems it’s not as big a problem for all the noobs to be using the same one.

  • The mistake here is not just picking. This is why most people who make the switch just go for the big one. lemmy.world, piefed.social, mastodon.social.

You’re gonna have to pick. Pick a username, pick a password, pick a browser, pick between fuckin Amazon or Alibaba, idk. Using windows is also a choice. But yeah I say just use mint and move on to the next one :)

Now, of course, if you just give money away, that’s no good at improving people’s lives

Actually, no, I’m pretty sure there have been many studies that show that literally just giving poor people money is all it takes. This is the first one I found after 15 seconds of searching; I think you are really underestimating how difficult it is for poor people to just get necessities, or how difficult it is to get out of debt traps.

I see where you’re coming from. Drug addicts, gambling addicts, etc, may not be the best demographics to just give money to. But that is not most poor people. It’s a tiny fraction! Literally all we need is wealth distribution, with no need to overcomplicate things. It might not be perfect, but it would be magnitudes better than what we have now.

Edit, to be clear, I’m not saying we shouldn’t fund hospitals and schools and whatnot. But it’s simply not true that giving money away isn’t effective.

  • I’d be cautious about seeing that as good news. I’ll always be suspicious of how many posts here are either partially or entirely automated, whether that means automatically reposting stuff from other sites, fully generated text, or just augmenting a human’s posting.

I like to think we’re too small for most botters to care about us, but who knows! As far as I’m aware, no one service has any reliable tools for spotting generated posts. No way are federated services prepared to deal with the insane influx of bots that would naturally come with being significantly more popular. Seems like all we have are captchas…

  • Oh, I didn’t realize how unclear that was. The disk is a 2TB NVME SSD. I searched and searched, even booted into Mint on another disk and tried to search from there, and could only find a few hundred GB worth of files (probably about 600GB if I had to guess, lol). I genuinely have no idea what could have been taking up nearly 1.4TB of space, so that’s all I meant when I said “only.”

My suspicion is that something was going wrong whenever I deleted anything. Maybe for some reason the data just weren’t going anywhere, even though the trash was empty and they were no longer showing up in their old locations. Hence the term “clogged.” No similar issues with Cachy just yet, though.

They also edited a bunch of the stuff within the original shots. I know someone who worked on it and they were showing me some of the artifacting; the short extras in particular have had their faces absolutely destroyed, and it even added a few that weren’t there before. It’s very funny to me that they upscaled it for the Sphere, but you are ABSOLUTELY NOT meant to look directly at anything that got inserted.
