I work a lot of college events, and once worked a graduation reception at an engineering school. We were able to watch the graduation on TV while we waited for the ceremony to end, and I marvelled at how well the Dean strolled through all those Indian and Chinese names like it was nothing.
I met him at the reception afterwards, and told him how impressed I was with his pronunciations, and he said “I work with my assistant for six weeks before graduation, practicing their names. They paid a lot of money, and worked really hard to get to this point, the least I can do is get their names right at their graduation.”
And he was absolutely sincere when he said it, and I was impressed even more.

The politicians who like to excoriate each other over single digit unemployment numbers under 5%, are all going to be gaslighting us that permanent double-digit employment rates are perfectly normal.
It’s not even about if THIS specific strategy would work in America, it’s that China approached the problem in Good Faith, in an attempt to make a genuine improvement.
In America, about the best we could hope for would be passing a bill and a budget for an issue, and then it’s considered fixed. No accountability, no objectives. And that’s the best case scenario.
Worst case scenario is that the whole legislation is a scam to shift money from the Treasury to private pockets. It’s a about 3:1 in favor of this strategy, no matter who is in office.
We don’t do anything with a Good Faith commitment to solving a problem. It’s always about self-aggrandizing, poking the other guy in the eye, or stealing as much money as possible.
So what you’re saying is that we should be taking more, a LOT more? We should keep taking until it does help somebody?
