Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council on Wednesday criticized China’s framing of cross-strait relations as “family matters.”

Commenting on KMT Chair Cheng Li-wun’s (鄭麗文) upcoming visit to China, China’s Taiwan Affairs Office Spokesperson Zhang Han said, “Both sides of the Taiwan Strait are Chinese people and belong to one family,” per CNA. Zhang added that “Cross-strait affairs are family matters” that should be resolved through dialogue “among family members.”

The MAC said in a statement that peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait concern regional security and are also linked to the global economy. Cross-strait issues are not “family matters,” as claimed by the Chinese Communist Party, the council said. Beijing’s remarks, it added, show its intent to use Cheng’s visit to portray cross-strait relations as an internal matter.

The MAC said the government is closely monitoring developments related to Cheng’s visit and any potential Cheng – Xi meeting. It also called on Cheng to take China’s coercion toward Taiwan seriously and uphold the principles of equality and dignity. The council urged Cheng to avoid aligning with Beijing’s political positions or falling for its United Front strategy.
