The myth of a blue Texas is now a reality.
Democrat James Talarico has defeated Republican state Attorney General Ken Paxton in one of the most hotly contested Senate races of the year. Shortly after Talarico was projected to win, Democrat Gina Hinojosa was projected the winner over longtime Republican Governor Greg Abbott.
The victories marks a seismic shift in Texas politics, and in the nation’s current political map, ending a 32-year statewide drought for Democrats in the Republican stronghold. The party now controls the state’s governership, as well as a U.S. Senate seat there for at least the next six years.
The Senate race started with two bitter primaries, with Talarico defeating Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas) on the Democratic side, and Paxton defeating incumbent Senator John Cornyn after landing Donald Trump’s endorsement. Cornyn refused to endorse his party’s nominee after losing the primary, citing Paxton’s long record of corruption and abuse of office. In audio leaked to Rolling Stone last month, Paxton griped about how much the contentious primary with Paxton hurt his chances.
Cornyn was one of the first to celebrate Talarico’s win on Tuesday. “The voters have spoken, and I want to extend my congratulations to James Talarico on his election to the U.S. Senate,” he wrote. “I look forward to meeting him and offering my assistance with his transition as he prepares to serve Texans in the U.S. Senate.”
I feel better about flying home tomorrow.
And that fucking wretch without legs isn’t governor anymore. Holy shit, good fucking job today, Texas
I feel far better flying home tomorrow. To Austin. Where the state government hates us.
