I want to preemptively block, on a few Fediverse platforms I’m developing for, instances that block many others, and I’d like to know which instances those are. Here’s what I’ve found:
Software-level blocklists (apply before you even pick an instance):
- Tesseract (the frontend associated with
startrek.website) shipped a hidden, hardcoded blocklist that users could not see or easily override; this is the most aggressive software-level example. - PieFed downloads the
no-qanonlist on setup and blocks those domains by default; admins can unblock them individually, so it’s semi-hardcoded rather than truly permanent. It casts a wide net and is politically charged, which makes it a common candidate for “do not federate by default” lists.
Instances with the largest outgoing block counts:
- beehaw.org – 405 defederations.
- lemmy.blahaj.zone – 312 blocked instances.
- programming.dev – 324 blocked.
- lemmy.dbzer0.com – 214 blocked.
- lemmy.ml – 210 blocked.
- lemmy.world – 204 blocked.
Allowlist exceptions (block almost everyone by default):
- Hexbear runs an allow-list model—it doesn’t just block a few bad actors, it only federates with instances explicitly approved, which is the most restrictive default posture you can inherit.
