Wow has to be the reaction to this, though it’s been said for a couple of years now.
This is stuff you used to only hear in places like outback and north Australia.
It’s more profound as a Queenslander living in a more temperate climate and surviving without air conditioning. It tells me that conditions are becoming quite unbearable in the cooler parts of the Northern Hemisphere, where the people are less acclimatised to dealing with this kind of heat.
It is also frustrating to see those who are, commenting that 30-35C temperatures are mild. The truth is they are never really mild, especially above 35 and that’s worsened with humidity.
Running AC whilst keeping one’s entire room open to the searing heat outside is even less responsible than using AI to generate a slop image of someone doing that to illustrate an article.
In France, authorities reported at least 2,000 additional deaths in a single week. Germany has reported more than 5,000 excess deaths this year… Heat waves kill more than 175,000 Europeans every year
This shit is at crisis levels. It’s amazing how much Europeans as a whole are against such a basic, life-saving, technology.
The Greatest Invention of the 20th Century - Air Conditioning
Holy fuck. I’ve heard about it, but nearly 200k deaths annual?
That is fucking stupid.
I am in complete support of Europeans putting their genetics to the test and letting evolution select for people who can handle the heat.
My friend’s husband is French, and he believes they make people sick - it’s apparently a widespread belief there. He’s been slowly coming around lately after my friend put her foot down and made them get an air conditioner, especially after Europe’s insane heat this summer, but he still claims it was the AC any time anyone in the family gets sick.
It’s giving Korean fan death.
To be fair, there was a number of incidents where mold was growing in rooftop units and getting blown into buildings. Designs have changed a lot and that’s not an issue now.
Legionnaires disease! Big big thing that. Usually only happens with the huge units though, yeah? I’ve never heard of it happening with the small window units.
Yup, Europeans are even writing essays about how bad it is to have window AC because they drip. https://www.removepaywall.com/search?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ft.com%2Fcontent%2Ffe9be519-ceae-4279-83b1-220f9505d6a9
While there’s a point there, it’s really a case of chasing perfection.
Meanwhile they’re using gas fired boilers to heat.
