The regrettable conclusion I’ve come to is that Germany’s reconstruction was more or less successful in part due to the fact that ~12 million Germans were killed during the war, if memory serves. Surely a lot of innocent collateral…but also probably a lot of Nazi slime. That’s a lot of people you don’t need to worry about rehabilitating, or worry about them firebombing occupation forces, or sieg-heiling Holocaust survivors, or creating a lost cause myth to whitewash their crimes, or generally trying to gin up Round 2.
I’ve been convinced since 2020 when Trump won 5 million more votes in the middle of COVID while thousands of people dying per day that this country must suffer before we can recover. Americans are just too fucking stupid.
There is no such thing as a way out in a country made up of people who let Trump win a second time or voted for him a second time. Period.
Even when Trump is dead and the GOP out of office, we’ll still have a sea of contemptible morons making up a significant portion of our country.
