Using continuous imagery from NASA's PUNCH (Polarimeter to Unify the Corona and Heliosphere) mission, scientists predicted the near-Earth arrival of a solar eruption to within 30 minutes in an initial proof-of-concept test. The results, presented Tuesday at the Committee on Space Research Scientific Meeting and under review at the journal Space Weather, could revolutionize the way Earth-impacting storms are forecast.
This is really good news. It’s hard to overstate how much damage a large, unforecasted CME event could do. It could be civilization-ending given where we are at this point.
I hope that when a really bad CME event that happens that we previously would not have been able to forecast without this… that this work is celebrated for saving so many lives pre-emptively.
I want it quantified in terms of dollars spent on the project per life saved, I bet it will be a damn good deal.
