It was totally off in tone and characters, but as Hollywood adaptations go it was pretty OK. On the other hand it was a fun action comedy with a SciFi veneer.
It took several aspects from the short stories in ‘the complete robot’ and kind of mashed them together in a way that didn’t really match the tone of any of them.
I mean the first couple of episodes had the protagonist rape a prisoner and not as any kind of character or social commentary so I can safely say it just sucked.

I, Robot at least had substantial aspects taken from (mostly) the last short story. IIRC the bulk of the overarching plot was based off of it.
