Yeah. Right now lemmy is more like the bad part of town where your parents get worried you live there, but it’s got its own character even if you do assume every loud noise is a gunshot and can’t buy groceries nearby. More diverse perspectives and interests are like when a cultural center goes in and after school programs get implemented and suddenly there’s more artists moving in.
I don’t think lemmy will ever become the equivalent of when you walk through a rough neighborhood you used to live in and think that you couldn’t afford to live there anymore despite you not being poor anymore.
But I do think it has the potential to have active niche communities and a larger user base. And I think communities like this are part of it. By making more of “girl lemmy” with communities like this, and maybe even some women focused (rather than exclusive) meme communities and such we can make lemmy less unappealing to women who might be interested in what this app really has to offer. Aside from that interest posting and commenting is great.
And one of the best parts is that people who want the old lemmy feel can create isolated instances focused on ensuring that feeling remains.
In some ways, I hope so. There should be some second thinking happening before comments are posted, particularly those looking for a quick joke at the expense of a marginalized group.
