Police in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, body slammed a woman who was protesting the presence of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in her community, throwing her to the ground and giving her a concussion.

Video posted on social media shows law enforcement forcefully grabbing Iowa resident Annya Mari and throwing her to the floor. The July 7 incident occurred when police told her that they would be handcuffing her, which sent Mari and an unidentified woman into a state of confusion.

“What? She didn’t do anything,” the second woman, who was recording the encounter, yelled as law enforcement grabbed the woman before picking her up and slamming her on the floor. It remains unclear whether the person recording the video has a connection to Mari. It comes after the chilling last words of a man shot dead in Maine by an ICE agent were revealed.

In an interview following the encounter, Mari said she believes law enforcement targeted her because she’s been a common protester of ICE for years. She was arrested and charged with harassment of a public official and interference with official acts.

The incident occurred outside of a building where ICE check-ins were being held. Mari said she was in the facility to accompany migrants for their appointments and document cars entering and leaving the premises.

“It confirmed to me that the way that they show up for ICE is so, so aggressive and personal and I do believe I was targeted,” Mari said. “I feel like I was targeted as well as the other person that was arrested. We were targeted. We were being made examples of so that the loud mouths of the protestors would stop showing up.”

In the criminal complaint, the police department says Mari was “verbally interjecting herself into the investigation,” and that she was “flexing her upper body” before she was “escorted to the ground” by officers. In a lengthy statement released last week, the CRPD said it was launching an investigation into the case.
