A student pilot successfully landed a plane by herself after her instructor jumped to his death mid-flight.
She said her instructor told her “You know what to do” before leaping from the aircraft.
The article shows a picture of the instructor next to an image of a small single engine cessna.
Comment reads: You could literally land a plane by yourself after your instructor jumps to his death mid-flight and they’d still use a picture of a man.
Its difficult to miss it in the tweet. Its easy to miss it in the articles. In my quick glance, none of the headlines contained any gender information. Some ran the story before identifying the student. The CNN article, the one I read in its entirity, referred to the student by name once, and did not refer to her with pronouns, but referred to the pilot he/him pronouns twice.
The media framed this story around a man’s suicide, rather than a story of a woman’s unexpected solo flight. Both would be valid ways to tell the story, but its telling the publishers all went with the man’s story version.
