I am close to finishing my first zine :) It’s basically a poetry zine. The poem was written by my partner for me last year, so it’s highly personally to me and I won’t share it. I am really happy with how it turned out, especially as I would say I am a non-creative™ person.

But I also have more ideas for some other zines, which I hope to create soon :) And those I want to share or trade with others. Zines and the community around it just seem like so much fun. It’s really motivating :)

That’s so rad! Congrats on seeing that project through, I bet it looks awesome!

Are there zine communities here on Lemmy or do you have a recommendation? I’m intrigued :)

        Thank you <3

On Lemmy, there is !zines@slrpnk.net. I would say it’s more on the political/activist side due to the server the community is hosted on. But the first two pinned posts show an easy way how to fold a zine out of a sheet of paper. And that’s literally all you need, to create a zine. A sheet of paper and a pen! Even tho there are many forms and ways to do them.

And regarding content, there are basically no rules and you can just put whatever you want. It can be political or to share information. It can be personal, like sharing your own art/poems or doing collages. It can be silly comics or horror short stories. You can just make a list of your favourite animals or make a zine with a recipe of your favourite dish. Here is a online archive/library for example. As you can see zines can cover all kind of topics :)

And there are also many ways to share or distribute a zine. You could just hand them out for free at a concert/protest/gathering for example. There are zine fairs (even tho I have never been to one myself as there is none close to me), where they are presented and sold (depending on quality of the print and the size somewhere between $2-$20 maybe) or traded. I also found 1-2 online trades, where you could then send 3 copies of your zine and you will receive 3 zines back. So you can grow your own collection :) But they are based in Germany. But of you look for it, you will probably also find some in your area.

Here is a youtube video with a little introduction to zines and also some examples.

Wow thank you so much for this info!! This is really cool.

I hope you end up sharing other zines you make in the future, I’d love to see them!
