I care from the standpoint of labor being taken advantage of. But when it comes to the information resource aspect of it, I find it hard to care very much… maybe that’s wrong of me and I should care more, I don’t know. But although Wikipedia probably has a lot that is not tainted by imperialism in the way that explicitly political stuff on there is, it is also an engine of imperialist narrative on the internet. The empire is in decline and with it, the western internet in general is in decline, and yeah, it may “enshittify” Wikipedia in the process. Maybe we’re better off that way, even though it’s going to hurt sometimes in the interim. It’s too easy to be reflexively trusting of a Wikipedia entry when it has never properly earned that trust. Some people even extend that trust to LLMs of all things.

People in the western media bubble need to reassess how they think about information and trust. A lot of people have been lied to a lot for a long time by the major institutions that rule over them. Some people recognize shades of this and go in weird directions, like anti-vax or anti-science. But somehow we have to help people develop a more grounded basis to work with, through dialectical materialism.
