We open on you, the intrepid adventurers, stumbling out of the inn. The dry air stings your nostrils as the morning sun burns your eyes. Your worst nightmares would be a welcome relief from this hangover.

You wander up to the job board outside the guild’s headquarters, hoping to find a way to get enough gold to cover last night’s tab. There is only one notice pinned. You tear the old dry paper off of the wall and find some shade to read it in. After settling down, you see the job is posted from a member of the artificer’s guild. It reads as follows.

“NOTICE OF EMPLOYMENT: Seeking adventurer(s) to serve as night watchmen for my workshop. Recent criminal activity have lead to a need of increased security. Enter through back. Will pay 50 gold. – Fregous Fastspear”

Do you accept the job?

[[YES]]

Come dusk, you wander into the back of the workshop. The air is wet and oily. You find yourself in a dimly lit room. A small fan circulates the air on it’s own, with no need of an external hand to provide motion. A small box sits at a desk. Light dances from it’s surface.

You can make no sense of what the light could mean.

As you begin to make sense of your surroundings, the door behind you slams shut. It seems you’ll be stuck here for the night no matter what. As your eyes adjust to the darkness, a mechanical ringing can be heard.

“Hello? Hello Hello?” A tinny voice calls out. "Uh… I wanted to record a message for you to help you get settled in on your first night.

Um… I actually worked in that office before you.

I’m…finishing up my last week now, as a matter of fact, so… ‥I know it can be a bit overwhelming.

But I’m here to tell you there’s nothing to worry about.

Uh, you’ll do fine.

So, let’s just focus on getting you through your first week, okay?

Uh, let’s see.

First there’s an introductory greeting from the artificer, that I’m supposed to read.

Uh, i-it’s kind of a legal thing, you know.

Um, ‘Welcome to Freggy Fastspear’s Pizza.’

‘A magical place for kids and grown-ups alike, where fantasy and fun come to life.’

Uh, the constructs here… ‥do get a bit quirky at night…"

The voice trails off.
