Nicolas Guillou said the Trump administration’s use of sanctions undermines European democracy and called for Europe to curb reliance on American tech.
An International Criminal Court judge sanctioned by the United States says the measures are meant to intimidate other European judges and is urging the European Union to push back.
Nicolas Guillou, one of the court’s 18 sitting judges, was placed under U.S. sanctions last year after issuing an arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over alleged war crimes in Gaza.
On Tuesday he plans to meet Economy Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis and Financial Services Commissioner Maria Luís Albuquerque to discuss his case and what he says are potential remedies to a practice he describes as political interference in the court’s work.
The EU has a nuclear bomb when it comes to trade: ban, or apply huge “tariffs” on US tech services. Walk away from any patent agreements for good measure.
The US economy would literally implode.
Right now that’s just unthinkable because of how much European companies rely on American services, but opening up alternatives that could make this possible is a huge bargaining chip.
Announce increase on tariffs each year, so that european companies have time and ability to adapt. This also applies continuous pressure on the US.
