I’ve been watching anime since the 80s, and I’ve had quite a few favorites over all that time, but I have to say, the writing and art style of Frieren has completely blown me away.

What do you think of the series?

I’m not caught up yet, having difficulty finding the newest episodes here in the US.

I 've seen both seasons. It is not for me. If it was me a decade ago, I’d maybe like it.

I am a bit jaded and tired with certain tropes.

I can’t stand people in power acting like children. I dislike the trope of 1000 years old that have emotional maturity of teenagers. She sometimes feels autistic? Maybe that was the goal?

I did enjoy that it took Frieren a human lifetime to realize she had feelings for Himmel. It made sense in the story and the created world.

I am not a fan of anachronistic soup the series is. Paper planes, burgers and 20th century clothing in a medieval fantasy just seem weird to me.

The magic academy arc was weird with the test rules. The uneven approach to killing other candidates just did not make sense from any perspective. That was the biggest plot hole in the world for me. The magic exposition there where also too much in-your-face and unnecessary. The magic itself is also suddenly awesome but impractical, if honing the basics make you superpowerful (and the shields are the prime example of it).

I don’t remember what else made me not like it. The main reason why it wasn’t for me though is that… I’ve already seen stories just like that (e.g. Martha Wells), and Frieren brought - for me - nothing new to the table.

I don’t watch a lot of anime, and about 50% of the ones I try I dislike.
Frieren almost instantly became my favorite anime and it’s stayed that way from episode 1.

What about it makes it thus for you? I have been on the fence about watching it. Like you I have been watching anime since the 80s and I struggle trying to find my footing with newer anime often. What makes this one different?

It doesn’t have a lot of action, other than that I can’t see a reason why one might not like it. And the animation is absolutely stunning, may be the most beautiful animation I have ever seen
