US doesn’t have ‘Democracy’ and likely never did. What you have is a show where the Epstein class manipulates the population. A real Democracy requires enlightened citizens that know how the world looks like. All information in US are manipulated by power-people, so Mericans can only know about and vote for the two sides of the same circus that keeps having the same policies.
What we see now is the real face of those in power, not some ‘maga’ group that had little say in who wins or what opinions they (they are just fed the right information, and US democracy is proven to not work).
The whole idea of the ‘superdumb maga fascist’ are likely fabricated and exaggerated through a shitload of selective video clips in one of the many propaganda campaigns always running. Anyway, I think that ‘thinking’ and ‘reasoning’ are just evolved movement. We have sensors and actuators and an ever increasing complexity of signal moving from sensors to actuators through a processing layer that eventually turns into our cognition. For bacteria, there’s a real short way from signal to actuation, but in ginormous life such as us, we delay signals and process them over many layers of complexity, but all signals eventually maps to an action, a movement.
The world model of a bacterium isn’t big and it likely doesn’t have complexity enough to shape a full spatial sense (only directional based on gradients - taxochemical reaction ?). More complex organisms creates internal representations of sensors/signals in a world model, and senses only those representations, so our core executive cognition never sees anything but highly abstract representations of real signals, never the direct signal itself. It does however accumulate in the cognitive structure and WILL map to 1 or more actions based on it later.
Like the Author, I think this article creates better understanding of both living systems but also cognition in its simplest binary form - converge or diverge, safety vs exploration, go back or go forward - much like the simple pulsing behavior of slime molds.

Crystal is a general-purpose, object-oriented programming language. With syntax inspired by Ruby, it’s a compiled language with static type-checking. Types are resolved by an advanced type inference algorithm.
I think it’ll get harder and harder to find ‘pure’ distros. For a while you can maybe rely on something similar to Gnu linux-libre kernel that removes proprietary blobs, or BSD, or Gnu Herd kernels etc, but linux-libre is already a pain if you need certain hw drivers, and eventually an anti-ai kernel will become crippled even worse, and it will become too hard to keep track of what kernels/parts of kernels is AI assisted code or not.
In the future, more and more new features will be from ai assisted code, and pretty soon, the anti-ai kernel will lose out to ai-assisted kernels in features, speed and soon stability (bug-finding etc).
The same goes for the rest of the distros that tries to avoid ai-assisted tools and code, and you/others will imho get completely swamped by this transformation. In fact, you will most certainly need an agent to keep constant track of this development.
I’m okay with AI, but I kind of feel for those trying to avoid it. Its hard enough just to avoid proprietary crap, and to me, avoiding ai-assists, is an even bigger mountain to climb. I do wish you all best of luck on that journey.
Ps. There ARE fully open models trained on fully libre with open libre data-sets, and for you - ethical data oriented - you could/should? probably accept that ‘non-pure’ situation, and use such an open llm to either maintain an ethical distro, or keep unethical ai-assist as low as you can get away with, for as long as you can.
