Yeah, I see my 2021 Seat Leon FR PHEV hatchback as an appliance, it takes me where I want to go, I am only licensed to drive an automatic, but do so well.

Now, after two and a half years of driving, I am thinking about learning the paddle shifter, but eh, it just seems like another distraction.

I mean, I have tried to learn the manual gearbox, and I would have gotten it given more time, but it took me about a year to learn to drive an automatic, this was while working full time at the same time. So I decided that with the rise of EVs and automatic gearboxes, I didn’t want to spend another half a year learning something that is going away.

I agree with you to a point, if you got the same kind of license taking the test in an automatic car as in a manual car, then I agree that a critical component is missing, but here in Sweden you are limited to only being allowed to drive automatic cars if you took the test in an automatic car.

If I need to, I am absolutely not against learning a manual gearbox and taking a new test later.

Me relying on an automatic gearbox does not make me a worse driver than the average driver.

I saw a comment in a car thread in a general interest community that claimed that if you couldn’t drive with a manual gearbox, you shouldn’t be issued a license.

I am a Swede and this was on a Swedish forum.

Most people here knows how to drive manually, I don’t, and I drive far better than plenty of manual drivers.

  • Correction:

There is an ocean of software alternatives, however there are few alternatives that offer a direct alternative to Microsoft when it comes to being able to put the blame on them.

With most open source systems, the buck stops with you.

Now, I know there are companies that offers to take that buck and accept the risk, though they are not plenty when it comes as a realistic competitor to Microsoft.

Then you need to consider what alternatives exist to all third party software you need to run a company, the vast majority only run on Windows.

I work in the IT department of a company in the finance sector, show me an open source alternative to the Bloomberg client that runs on Linux and is approved by Bloomberg with an add-in that is as integrated into Libre Office as the official client is with Excel.

I guarantee that it is the same in basically every company/sector, they all have workflows that are simply not possible without Windows/Office or Microsoft as a whole.

Ok, so you start a new company, with all computers running open source software, Windows/MacOS is banned, that will only last until you notice that you can earn more money, while wasting time and money, while hiring new staff easier by running Windows/Mac.

Would you rather shutdown you company than accept reality and use Microsoft software.

I want open source to win, but ignoring reality is dumb

  • This is correct, as I am looking at the situation right now, I don’t see a realistic way for Ukraine to kick out Russia from their land completely, unless something big happens, I believe we are looking forward to a negotiated peace.

As a Swede, who gladly supports all aid packages with supplies, weapons and materiel we send, I wan’t nothing more than for Ukraine to kick Russia to the curb, but I don’t see that happening.

I’d rather prepare for a bad negotiated peace, if ever so short, and be surprised by Ukraine succeeding, than the opposite.

  • I fully agree, but we are talking about two different things.

I said that currently I don’t see an end to the war that doesn’t include Ukraine having to give up land.

That is all that I said, I actually forgot to add what I wrote in a comment a few days back, where I said that any agreement where Ukraine looses land is bound to lead to a new conflict relatively shortly thereafter.

My earlier comment specifically called out that Ukraine loosing land is unfair.

I truly wish that Ukraine can muster the strength to kick Russia out baldy enough that Russia learn their lesson.

I am a Swede and I smile every time we give more aid, weapons and other related materiels to Ukraine, I gladly pay my taxes for this.

At the same time, if I try to look realistically at the conflict, at this point in time I don’t see Ukraine kicking Russia out, it looks more and more as the end of the current conflict will come in the form of a negotiated peace, if only for a relatively short time.

  • “You know, this guy — Vladimir, whatever his name is — total disaster! Total disaster! He’s in Ukraine, causing all kinds of problems, and frankly, he’s been very disrespectful. Very disrespectful!”

“We gave them a beautiful deal — beautiful! We delivered Putin’s peace plan right to Kiev, hand-delivered, like Amazon Prime, and what do we get? Nothing! Just whining, complaining, fake accusations — the usual nonsense!”

“If they had just said yes — just said yes! — we’d have peace, we’d have stability, and quite frankly, I’d be getting the Nobel Peace Prize. Everybody knows it. Everybody!”

My imagined quotes from a possible Trump rant about the situation.
