if you use something like Neovim/Lazyvim or NVChad it’s pretty easy to pick up as you can just hit space and it’ll tell you pretty much everything you can do. Neovim also includes a decent tutorial. you can pick up the absolute basics pretty quickly, easily within a day or so.

I’ve been using SpaceHey for a bit now. It’s the project of a college kid to recreate Myspace exactly as it was in the early 00s. it works, it works well. you can do all the things you used to be able to do on Myspace. edit your profile with HTML, autoplay music, etc. It’s fun and I honestly wished more people were on it/used it for more than a day to get that nostalgia kick.

probably about as popular as their search engine that you pay for. Either you absolutely love it or you absolutely hate it.

I briefly used both their search engine and Orion on another OS. I wasn’t impressed with either and could never justify the monthly cost.

just seems like extremely poor communication and more “open letter” bullshit that’s really a nothing burger. Seems like one or two people said “we’re disbanding!” while based on some threads I’ve read the remaining team was like “yeah…we really didn’t want to”

It’s not a good look for the project when these people constantly get on the forums and post this stuff. just privately quietly resign. It’s two people or even one person who wasn’t happy and decided to nuke the ship on their way out.

You know if someone decided to set up a PR firm that focused purely on the Linux and FOSS communities they would make an absolute killing because NONE of these people know how to communicate jack all. it’s the same for every project. every single one.

I’m trying to build my own Wayland WM. why when there are so many out there? because I don’t feel like any of them do them well. either they all focus on fancy animations (hyprland) or slam you with features without focusing on specific things (mangowm) or primarily have issues with mouse/keyboard focus on games in window mode or just games in general when you toggle away from them and back (all of them) and that annoys me.

There’s one specific game I play in window mode with multiple clients of the game running, it’s EVE Online. ALL the Wayland WM’s have issues with this. you move away from the window and back it doesn’t grab the mouse back the first time or the keyboard won’t work the first time going back. X11 WMs have ZERO issues with this. but like with Niri you have to switch workspaces and back just for it to grab the mouse/keyboard again. Hyprland you have to switch windows and back. Sway is the same type of deal.

So I’m trying to build a Wayland WM with a focus on gaming and vim style navigation as that’s what I do on my machines. game and code. I just want to take a suckless type approach and do one thing and one thing well. I’m also tired of the idiotic configs and resource hogs of many of these. there’s an x11 WM called SXWM written by a 13 year old whose config file is the most simple and clean one I’ve ever seen. many x11 WMs are like this (CTWM is another example of a clean and simple config) I want to adapt that to Wayland as hyprlands switch to lua and thus turning it into a mess also annoyed me.

it’s a big project but one that I feel needs to be done. so I’m just building something that tiles, is solid with the mouse and keyboard, and has a very simple config and low resources. that’s it.

I had a PowerMac G4 with the 20inch cinema display when I was in my early 20s. my Dad bought it for me from the Apple store refurbished and I remember he said to me “do something with it.” as at the time, even refurbished, it was a very expensive buy.

Favourite PC I ever owned and I’m by no means an Apple fanboy, I haven’t used a Mac in years. but that thing…that thing was just quality. With it I learned web development and because of it I’m still in the dev field to this day. My Dad was very happy his investment paid off and I did end up “doing something with it”. wish I still had it.

Well to follow up I decided that this could potentially be more of a me problem than a fedora one. And actually…it was a KDE problem. I decided to switch to a basic WM, DWM, on it and low and behold all my problems just vanished. no crashing, switching to a TTY suddenly started working, audio and video was fine, no kick backs to the login screen. hell even something that SHOULD be unrelated as DNF suddenly improved.

So I’m not sure if I just got a wonky KDE install or an update went wrong with it but I’m more than happy to ditch KDE to keep using Fedora. I’d reinstall with a different spin but honestly at this point I spent a week or so setting this up i’ll just keep using the KDE version without the KDE. I’d like to switch the DM to something other than Plasma Login Manager but at this point I’m not sure if that’s a can of worms I should attempt to open.

So a question would be, is it a good idea to keep using Fedora KDE without using KDE? I’d just hate to update a system for something that I’m not going to use. Or would I just be better off reinstalling Fedora with a basic spin or a WM focused one.

I already have them, didn’t improve anything.

i don’t know if it was just the hardware I had it on or what but had to reinstall it a couple times as for whatever reason the desktop manager kept breaking, it wouldn’t kick over to a TTY when hitting ctl+alt+f2, it decides on a whim when it will or won’t display the grub menu, audio issues as well as AMD GPU issues of all things which I found weird, random kick outs back to the desktop manager or just straight up crashing (using Fedora KDE which I wish I picked a different “spin”) and I found it sluggish as well as dnf being slow regardless of the fact I edited the dnf.conf to set install_weak_deps to false, max parallel downloads to 10 and fastestmirror to true.

Sorry but I just don’t like it. Not to say I think it’s a bad distro it’s just clearly not one for me.

I’m actually switching from Fedora today. miserable experience.

yeah separate drives is the way to go. On one of my thinkpads I have linux and windows. each on it’s own drive. Lenovo makes it easy as I don’t have to be concerned about grub or anything as I can select which one to start via a simple bios selection. with the bullshit windows updates I don’t have to worry about it messing up my linux install.

it’s an easy and straight forward introduction to linux OR simply an easy to install distro for people who simply want to game and not tinker.

I have my main machine as a dual partition. my main daily driver is FreeBSD. for gaming my other partition is Bazzite and that’s all it’s for. gaming. I don’t want to install fedora and do more tinkering. I just need a distro that I install and forget about so I can open steam and play something. that’s it. Bazzite achieves that for me.

well of course they were. it’s hard to update or scale AI built crap because the vast majority of the time the agent will deny even building it and then re-write whatever it previously wrote from scratch.

right the product people won’t care or won’t know so the LLM will just spit out whatever. to the product people it’ll look legit and make sense. once it’s handed to a dev in most cases it might as well just be thrown out of the window. so it’s pointless. it’d be easier/faster to just cut out the middle man, the AI, and go directly to the dev and have the product people tell them exactly what they want/need.

what I always love about this stuff is most of the time it simply boils down to not committing changes. the LLM constantly assumes that you’re committing, it will NEVER tell you or recommend you commit, but it assumes you are. so these tech bros are just cruising along, vibing, and then boom the agent does something that nukes the entire thing. panic. tech bro starts freaking out on the agent. agent says “lets rebase or pull the previous commit” and gives them the git code to do that. tech bro hasn’t committed shit. and this is how you get a nuked prod environment.

“DON’T HALLUCINATE!” that’s always my favourite.

even just using it to translate their thoughts into a bullet list isn’t going to work most of the time. LLMs training is, the majority of the time, out of date and stacks change/move faster than an agents data. Plus LLMs favour things that have been posted about on blogs, linkedin posts, etc rather than stuff that is proven and tested.

Like for example it might suggest using a language or library that is insanely out of date or just won’t work but recommends it based purely on say blog posts that have talked a lot about it or it’s potential to do something that it currently can’t do. or like I said it’ll suggest something that’s out of date simply because there’s more documentation online about that specific version than the most up to date version. Or the LLM will report on something that has a “known issue” from like early 2025 and suggests not using it when said issue has been patched routinely since then because the data the LLM has is out of date. the data is constantly out of date.

I started watching Chainsmoker Cat and holy crap it hit WAY too close to home for me as someone who was once very broke and smoked. Like in the first episode she was doing stuff that I thought only I ever did. celebrating over finding a “long one”, smoking butts that had a bit of grime on them, digging through butts to pick out the ones that were still “smokeable”, doing the whole “i have 6 smokes left and don’t get paid for another 6 days, i can do one a day until then” and then not doing that.

I had to stop midway through the second episode cause A. it was making me want to smoke again and B. it was reminding me of my past.
