Reminds me of the movie Amalie where her father thought she had a heart issue because every time he checked her heart rate it would make her heart race…

2·1 month agoI would be interested to see links for the separation of children. I know generally in the US there is child protective services which take children generally from parents who may be endangering their children. If there is evidence of being needlessly targeted by CPS it sounds like a very good class action lawsuit.
Yes with the current US administration I’ve seen the push to make certain groups stateless. It’s sad to see behavior that’s more common in 2nd and 3rd world nations happening in more developed countries. It doesn’t inspire hope for our development.
Also I understand the war on drugs was intended to weaken the democratic voting base and attack primarily black communities much like the original propaganda around the criminalization of marijuana.
I live in a few countries and I’ve learned that nowhere is homogeneous, for instance not even Israel. There are people there also risking their wellbeing to protest the actions of their government. I’ve also learned everywhere is slightly horrific. The only side I am is that of the people trying to bring more wellbeing to the world, I do not particularly worship any nation, religion, or political philosophy. I want every last soul to be better and healthier no matter where they are.
The US is mostly a shame because it had so much potential to bring wellbeing to itself and the world. It still could and so can others. Is it particularly evil or more evil than another? Not really, the scale of it’s influence is more so the difference. Could things have been worse with another nation in charge? Definitely. Could it have been better? Definitely. I wouldn’t suggest for instance Museveni of Uganda take charge of the world, things would be quite horrific today if that was the case. I also suspect things might have been very difficult had Germany won WWII, they could have expanded their ethnic cleansing globally.
I guess what i’m getting at is there’s no boogie man as such, humans are generally bad. With great power comes great responsibility and judgement so by that rule the US should receive the most judgement but one should not simultaneously fall into the misconception that it’s the US alone who has done awful things or is worthy of judgement. Same to people who may judge China, or Israel or really anyone else. We all are collectively kind are evil.
As for food, if there is no food everywhere will become very violent very fast. That’s just human nature.

2·1 month agoIt’s funny how much the arguments made in that movie about TV are true for the internet and now AI. Soon we will have our own parlor walls like in Fahrenheit 451. Instead of heeding the warning we just went deeper into the cave.
Anyone here used alpine? Seems like it’s supposed to be for routers or maybe old hardware?

2·1 month agoThe way you worded your previous comment seemed very dismissive of any other genocide besides the one in Gaza. If it’s worth anything as someone who lives in east Africa, there’s generally little news or care in reverse for other areas such as Gaza and Myanmar or what’s happening in the west, middle east or east as they don’t care about Africa. Even care extending beyond neighboring nations is hard to find here sometimes. In actuality most people don’t care about most things unless it directly affects them. In the end the safest assumption is we are on our own and our suffering doesn’t matter to anyone else even when it is reported in the news which is indeed unfortunate. The only time action seems to be taken is for political or financial gain, not to actually to help people.
Most definitely what happened to the native Americans was a genocide. It would be difficult to argue it’s an active genocide but you’re free to your opinions. Similarly I’m not sure the US domestic war on drugs meets the criteria for the word like the instances such as Gaza or the above. You’re free to your opinions. As for running guns, if not them then it would be the Russians typically although they have their hands full with Ukraine. If the US stopped selling weapons today little would change because the money to buy is still there. I will say the US actively destabilizing Latin America and allowing the open export of weapons is very noticeable. Similarly China selling chemical precursors to Latin America cartels who run drugs to the US is noticeable, a smart reversal of the opium tactic the British used.
In actuality it’s hard to find a nation these days that hasn’t or isn’t causing something horrific.

21·1 month agoThere is Sudan, particularly the Darfur region in which non-Arab ethnic groups, such as the Masalit, Fur, and Zaghawa have been targeted for eradication by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Direct deaths from conflict 30,000 to over 150,000+. Indirect/Famine Deaths are estimated at 500,000+ (primarily children).
Myanmar (Burma), where the Rohingya Muslims are being eradicated by the The Myanmar Military. Initial Genocidal Campaign (2017) at least 9,000 to 25,000+ Rohingya deaths. Ongoing Post-Coup Civil War (2021–Present): Thousands more across multiple ethnic groups.
China (Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region) where the Uyghurs, Kazakhs, and other predominantly Muslim Turkic minorities are being eradicated by the Chinese Government. Death toll is inconclusive due to strict control of information by the Chinese government. Watchdogs rely on state data which showed an 84% drop in natural population growth rates in predominantly Uyghur regions. Another point of importance is the consistent (relative to anywhere else on earth) surplus of human organs for transplant in China.
Ethiopia (Amhara and Tigray Regions) where the Ethnic Amharas (and previously Tigrayans) are being eradicated by the state security forces and various regional ethnic militias. Tigray War (2020–2022): Estimated 600,000+ deaths. Amhara Conflict (2023–Present): 7,700 to 10,000+ deaths.
For reference the Gaza genocide. Direct Violent Deaths: Over 73,000 Palestinians. Presumed/Indirect Deaths: 10,000+ missing under rubble; tens of thousands more from disease/starvation to date.
So it’s interesting to watch the global outcry for kinda only one of these genocides particularly given how horrific the incidents in the Tigary and Darfur region are. Its almost as if the global and western news doesn’t care about brown people.
Also the way you worded your comment seems very dismissive of the horrific human suffering that is going on anywhere besides Gaza.

2·1 month agoI think I would trade 80 days in jail for an absolutely slam dunk case. I wonder how much tax money he’s about to get. That’s the unfortunate thing when the state messes up, it’s us the tax payer who lose. Also wtf only 85% accuracy? I feel like if you are going to do this you should need at least five sigma of confidence aka a provable 99.999% confidence in the result. Also can you imagine how fucked he would be without those work records or other proof he wasn’t in the area? I’ma start recording my ass on the daily just in case.
Like facial recognition is a thing but being the soul evidence for an arrest? Maybe if it was facial recognition alongside literally any other hard evidence to corroborate that’s the person.
I think we’re in the awkward teen years of AI. From like 2015 to 2022 was like the baby years where everyone was amazed at that cool new toy. Then like 2022 to 2030 are the angsty teen years where it kinda works, kinda doesn’t, seems kinda pissed off at its parents. Then 2030 to 2050 will be the big AI adult years where it actually delivers and we start seeing society fundamentally change, personal robotics, automated society and the whole nine. Then 2050+ it may grow into something much more than we imagined for better or worse.
Personally I think they way over promised. AI development has been bonkers fast but it’s just not there yet. With a lack of regulation and halfway AI most people are pretty disgruntled. The fact that people are even making posts like this is insane. Like shit didn’t really start popping off until 2017, it’s been 9 years and we want strong AI already when in like 2015 most people thought we wouldn’t even be at this level of AI until like 2100.

1·1 month agoGlobal food production is difficult. That said when one is doing things that could influence millions to billions of people they most definitely have the finances to ensure it’s a good idea. Sidebar, it’s actually kinda insane we can feed 8 billion people (arguably much more given less waste) in the first place. It is an absolute modern marvel and crowning achievement of science that it is even physically possible to begin with. I think we often overlook what is essentially magic at any other point in human history that we now consider mundane.
Rachel Carson’s silent spring wasn’t a manual, with great scientific power comes (or at least should come) great responsibility.

21·1 month agoSo just Palestine and not the other genocides currently that get essentially zero attention or care like their lives don’t matter?
I think the issue people have, particularly if they have traveled there is that in many locations there isn’t the same sense of public cleanliness. There are poorer nations that are very clean so it’s not necessarily an issue of money, but an issue of desire. Not to single India out, there are many places that have chosen to not do waste management.

Net install iso’s are a thing for some distros, I’m not sure about that distro specifically. Technically speaking all distros are installed from online as in you download the iso then install it.
